  • Hard News: It is your right and duty to vote,

Speights beer (since 1876) has a three star logo. The first official performance of the anthem was in Dunedin Christmas 1876.

(There was an article in the North Shore Times on December 10 about Thomas Bracken and the anthem).

The three stars are usually the three islands of North Island, South Island and Stewart Island (not Waiheke).

Here is a link to the National Standards.

My sister works in a low-decile school. The children tend to start with very little language let alone reading/writing/maths skills and quite often moving house/country so is difficult for them to settle or learn.

The teachers there already know that very few of these children will meet the proposed standards at the set age levels. So how do they cram the missing elements of 5 years of learning into 1 year or is the whole cohort just dismissed as failures? Many of these children will gain the knowledge set after two years of school that most high-decile school children have at entry level.

  • Busytown: A turn-up for the books,

Apparently the booksellers.co.nz best-selling NZ fiction (adult) book counter is stuck - for yet another week the same book leads.

Someone bought TTS on TradeMe at the weekend for $50 plus postage - The Warehouse online has it at $33.

Contrary to belief of some, Penguin did not issue a recall and book not rare. The losers in this situation would seem to be the other authors trying to sell in the same market and probably students at University of Auckland will be subject to greater checks.

Project Aqua was the wrong plan and in the wrong place. More power production should be established closer to end-users.

Rather, the Judge formed the view that the case could have been resolved with a lesser, included charge, which was unavailable to the Crown due to the election of the defence of a trial by jury.

This paragraph near the end of the Scoop article implies that the system was worked in his favour.

  • Busytown: A turn-up for the books,

I note the book is still for sale on several overseas websites, and listed as being shipped from NZ; Penguin might want to send an update to its retailers.

Memo would seem to be - still keep selling. Maybe the reprint run will be the new edition. It seems all publicity is good for sales.

Flyer from Booklovers received on Sunday had the book advertised.

Some of the public libraries will be getting the book in the next couple of weeks - for the ones that have it already, all copies are either in transit or out on loan.

There is a Fags and Fat Conference in Wellington today. Which on one level seems an interesting linkage as for some people the reason they gave for not being able to give up smoking was that they would gain weight. On the other hand the willpower/won't power triggers or addictive behaviours may have common aspects.
