Like Robert, I'm fairly unaffected so far (apart from work in the CBD) - we live on the west side of the city in the Halswell area. September was therefore much worse for us in terms of liquefaction etc. This time around has been much harder on my mental health, but I think I'm getting there. Roads have not been much of an issue - I bike or use the bus.
Again, its a 'what can I do?' Apart from offering 'time out to look at the horses in the paddock & pick walnuts & apples', not very much it would seem. I have a friend with no water or loo yet & she is escaping as often as possible to her Mum's place north of the city.

I was born in Dunedin (1988), but have lived in Christchurch since 1991. I love Wellington & Dunedin, but get homesick for the plains, the mountains, the people very quickly. -
I'll admit that I bought a book of 100 NZ short stories last year in an effort to read more NZ authors. I'm about halfway through (and have been for a while!).
I’m finding it hard to engage with novels and each one takes ages for me to plough through
This. I have misplaced my ability (and desire?) to read anything too complex at present. All last year (when I did Pols Hons) I only really read (& re-read) Harry Potter, Terry Pratchett & Star Wars. Does this make me a bad person? I used to love reading new books, now its a chore.

Some of you may have seen this footage of the central city taken almost immediately after the quake. For those who don't know the CBD, the footage goes down Lichfield St to the intersection of High Street, Lichfield Street & Manchester Street.

Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to
I'm afraid that I'm also having huge trouble concentrating & keep forgetting what day it is, have no sense of time etc. I do live in Chch but a) didn't even _feel_ the quake (horse riding is a wonderful thing) and b) never lost power or water where I live on the western side of the city. So very lucky. Both of my parents work in the CBD & neither have cellphones so it was horrible not knowing for a few hours before they came home, but they did get home.
I'm constantly teary, John Key, Jim Mora & Bob Parker make me cry several times a day (when usually they only make me angry), I can't watch the news because it is too sad & my imagination runs amok. I run out of energy within an hour of going outside & I can't stand dealing with the people I live with. It's like all the optimism and resilience I had after the September quake has gone out without leaving a note.
If I'm feeling like this _I don't want to imagine_ how so many other people in this city are feeling. And I don't want to imagine how people in other parts of the country are feeling.
On the bright side, I seem to be able to sleep through aftershocks now after 6 months of practice :)

I also found that my cell started to lose battery very quickly BUT given the much-higher-than-normal* number of texts I was sending, perhaps not surprising.
Great to have you back Emma. This is a brilliant description of Round Two.
*My internal Thesaurus is yet to come back online post-Tuesday.
