  • Hard News: Windows 7: Actually Not Bad,

I've been a long time Dell fan but Dell's NZ online sales sucks badly - they haven't tracked the NZ$ changes - the quad core laptop I lust after comes in at some silly price over $12k - and the NZ web page is so poorly configured it's not actually possible to buy it.

A smart dell (as a graduation present to myself) is just about the only expensive, non-entry lavel piece of technology I've ever purchased. One of its drawcards was the super-duper international warranty and service. So this year I found myself in Italy when the fan broke. I phoned the assistance and they told me that yes, they could see my service code in the system, but it would take two weeks for the warranty to be transferred to Italy. Okay, says I once I've processed the information, it's just a fan after all. How much is it and where can I buy it? No sir, we cannot even sell it to you until your service tag details have been transferred into the European database.

Cue much swearing and banging of head on desk.

Can we briefly discuss your operating system, Russell?

It's not Apple's fault that Adobe can't handle Unix... Flash on Linux is a similar POS, and don't even ask about Flash on my favourite OS...

Sorry, I was unclear: I meant Russell's own operating system, the thing he uses to process all that information. By using that metaphor I neatly become my own worst enemy, but hey.

It always takes me several years to upgrade to a new operating system; the only time I did so when it was spanking new was with Vista and I lasted a week before going back to XP. I'm not anticipating updating to Windows 7 in a rush either. This however caught my eye

I routinely browse with dozens of tabs open, occasionally more than 100, and some of those pages have multiple Flash movies on them -- it was a serious issue.

Can we briefly discuss your operating system, Russell?

  • Speaker: How to Look Good as a Nazi,

Yes, that would have been a hostage-type situation.

I suspect flag-kissing and goose-stepping would die out pretty damn quickly.

The Lincoln students came up to Wellington last week (on their own dime) and visited the holocaust museum, were talked to by some people. A screening of Night and Fog was briefly part of the programme but they ran out of time.

No doubt, but Matthew would disagree with that narrow common usage and so do I.

Allende's suicide and the other 9/11 (1973) another country the USA has "tinkered" in
    no conspiracy there then...

Involvement - amply demonstrated by magistrates - in a number of bombings and subversive enterprises on Italian soil since at least 1969.

Which reminds me to urge those who live in the cities that the Italian film festival hasn't yet visited to go and see Sorrentino's The Deity - one of the best films I've seen in ages. The remaining dates are as follows:

    Christchurch Rialto Oct 22, 23, 24, 25
    Dunedin Rialto Oct 30, 31 Nov 2
    Nelson Suter Nov 5, 6, 7, 8
    Napier Century Nov 12, 13, 14, 17
    Tauranga Rialto Nov 19, 20, 21, 22

Also, Mr. Dentith would make the point that it's a conspiracy even if it actually happened, and conspiracy theories aren't fallacious by definition. Apologies if that point has been made already upthread. (Or indeed in the proper conspiracy thread!)

so simply by (lazily) deploying the sign of 'provocation' you can consign my enquiry to hell just like that, huh?

I think a much better reason for doing that is that you're consistently incoherent.

Gio, they were all out of industrial-size metaphorical blenders when I went into Hardly Normal the other day, so I had to make do with the household-size variety from Blond and Blond.

And who told you that puns are my kryptonite?

I'm really hoping that it's Auckland transport that'll be the hammer that knocks the gloss off National's honeymoon

To mix that metaphor any further I think you'd need some sort of industrial appliance.
