  • Hard News: Blog About Cat,

Oh, you have a Manx?! I had one when I was a child; black and white, no name. It came from somewhere in the neighbourhood and adopted us. Fiercely independent it would sleep in one of two places; the laundry room cupboard or in my bed at night at my feet. It would jump up and half asleep I'd lift the covers so it could crawl down to my feet... weird.

I was the only one that could touch it or pick it up. Sadly it got some horrid growth on its nose and had to be put down. But that cat was cool.

That explanation has given me a headache...

At the risk of doing a Nactional, I'll swing with what works. :)

I suffer very mild tinnitus and deal with it by imagining a radio with a large volume control button that I slowly turn down over a period of 2 to 3 minutes. Works really well.

Forgive me Jane, but please just f**k off? You've caused enough trouble as it is already.

  • Hard News: Music's emerging digital market,

I read quite a few PDFs in my line of work so Kobo sounds good from that perspective. I'm attracted to the multi-plaform-ity of Kobo - multiple sources of reading material is attractive.

And within minutes of passing it visitors will be exiting the motorway on to Nelson St where they'll drive down a bleak avenue of much more ghastly, jail-like, accommodation blocks.

By the time they pass the monolithic SkyCity block, they'll be asking the taxi driver to turn back to the nice new building we first passed, thinking the new prison must have been Auckland's classiest hotel.

(source: Brian Rudman, Granny H, 28 May 2010)

Which reminds me of the time driving an elderly friend of the family along Fanshawe St just after the new office buildings were built, fronting onto the Viaduct. "Is that a new prison?" she asked. "Excuse me?". "Are those the new prison buildings?" she said pointing to the battleship grey fortress like buildings. I laughed and told her they were new office buildings but yes, they were prisons of a sort.

Rudman's take on the entire blowup during election year is correct; we love locking poor brown people up, which costs both a pretty penny ($90k a year) and requires space.

Grrr if I were dictator I'd be finding better ways of spending that $90k/year/prisoner.

In discussion with a PhD student this morning I failed to move beyond the descriptor 'chicken coops' for the upper Nelson/Hobson St apartment blocks, but I shall pass on your descriptor.
