  • Hard News: Screen Wars,

Arg. Sorry. Mitigating circumstances: Wednesday morning, 14" screen about two feet away from me...

Nice to see my plan of picking a gravatar that could be mistaken for Russell's from two feet away is paying off.

  • Hard News: Screen Wars,

It's not so visible in the thumbnail there, but pencil man is very heavily mustachioed.

  • Hard News: Screen Wars,

Speaking of District 9, Evan Calder Williams took this picture in the streets of LA.

    Christ.

Now I feel as if I've been a bit of a ... er... curmudgeon.

Don't be silly now. I like it though if I have a small part in bringing fine minds together, and it was a pleasure recently to introduce Lyndon and Philip to each other's work. Their ability to channel Ambrose Bierce alone demands the highest praise.

  • Hard News: Screen Wars,

I knew Steve would post the link to that review :-)
    Here's my fave bit

Fools will accept District 9 for fantasy, yet its use of parable and symbolism also evoke the almost total misunderstanding that surrounds the circumstance of racial confusion and frustration recently seen when Harvard University tycoon Henry Louis Gates Jr. played the race card against a white Cambridge cop.

I thought District 9 was sensational. I'll go as far as to say that it reminded me of Waltz with Bashir.

On older people and childbearing, I wonder how many generations we need to do this before we start evolving to accommodate it ?

I'm pretty sure that's not how evolution works.

Actually, I was accusing you of awesomeness.

And now you know exactly what I meant.

Like I said earlier, we had to deal with this issue first-hand (trisomy 21, plus multiple deformities, to be exact), and it frankly fucks me right off that I'm unable to have a grown-up conversation about it around certain groups of people without pussy-footing around the whole career/carer debate.

You can have that debate all you want, I'm pretty sure that the issue here is not that some posters begrudge the science or the implications, or want the world to keep mum. We can just all do without the bullshit that garnished it on this thread (along the basic lines of "women are selfish if they choose to procreate later").

  • Southerly: The Secret Poetry of Economists,

I do believe you're accusing me of curmudgeonliness, Dr Tiso.

Actually, I was accusing you of awesomeness. Philip knows how I feel.

Just stake out the embassy. He'll have to go in and vote for a new government sooner rather than later.

I'll have you know we vote by post these days. To make tampering a little easier, for we are corrupt but fundamentally also very lazy.
