  • Southerly: Our Saddest and Most Tragic…,

Maybe we should start a support group for frustrated LaTeX users....

Perhaps. I know the guy next door is in a similar position. Although he mostly uses open office for collaboration.

Ha! I sense a fellow traveller.

Yes. Unfortunately, it's not so great for collaboration. Ironically the guy in the office next door is a command line/linux/latex type of guy, but we don't write stuff together.
What I really miss is Bibtex. Endnote really blows. Or at least it is bloated and cumbersome, and really crap at APA. I guess it's OK as a reference manager, and I like being able to click through to web of science of the pdf file, but I really miss the in-text referencing, and latex's innate sense of style and proportion.

  • Field Theory: Sunday Bloody Sunday Newspaper,

Players imprisoned in certain sections of the court, Subbuteo like restrictions on how far they can move with the ball

I thought, ah, sport was all about sitting down, thinking up the most contrary rule you can think of and then implementing it.
    My random selection
*Not being able to throw the ball in the direction you're aiming to move
*Only being able to move with the ball if you're bouncing it off the ground
*Only being able to take a good tactical position in relation to the other team (ie, nearer the goal) if you're in possession of the ball.
*Discover a slow, pointless, but hilarious looking method of moving through the water, and then make it into a discipline.

  • Field Theory: Sunday Bloody Sunday Newspaper,

Hadyn, perhaps there is a bright side to this. The Sunday papers are even-handed in that they provide skewed and unbalanced coverage of all topics, including sport.

I was playing Volleyball at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin on Wednesday (the court was right next to one of the doors into the arena where the netball was being played). At the time I was ruing not having a ticket (we did try to hijack the hospo carts going into the dressing room at one stage -- for the team access not the food of course). In the end it was an extremely fun game of volleyball (you know it's good when people actually forget about keeping score), and a pretty miss-able netball match.

Billy Elliot? WTF? I'm pleased we got to see a better class of movie than that (Cuckoo's nest, Zefirelli's R&J -- both only after studying the other version mind).

  • Hard News: Real Gone,

I thought it was weird that after taking over Echo in Dunedin they went from a high street store to a more destination shopping (near countdown and off the main street). It probably helped (not my bank account) that the shop was right on my bus-stop.

And agree with the comments re:Amoeba.

  • Field Theory: Vrooooom,

Formula One was certainly a great distraction as I was trying to read the papers for my 3 hour 4th year 8 student + 1/2 lecturer discussion group on Monday morning.

I remember the year the Volvo won. That must have been the only year I saw Bathurst I suspect. I have always had a soft sport for volvos, in part because I grew up driving one of these, the Volvo 164. A car that probably Holden could have built, and not too bad for Canterbury roads. Refined, plenty of torque, but shite on corners. It's pretty though. I did consider buying it from my parents, but it wasn't really at home in Dunedin.

  • Up Front: Mmmmmm, MMP,

I dunno how many times I've said 'affect is the verb, effect is the noun'. Except in this case, where I do mean 'effect'

Hmmm. As a sometime psychologist but also somtime grammar teacher, I too often have to use affect as a noun (as steven illustrates). And of course in present example, presumably there are things you wanted to effect so that your efforts could affect society?
