  • Island Life: The Grouse is done to a…,

    nieuwe haring

    mmmmm

My father told me to try this when I went to Amsterdam to explore my roots and it was every bit as good as he said.

I even had some vacuum packed and brought it back to NZ for him, not quite new but 24 hours old. The customs guys were bemused but obviously figured that anybody silly enough to declare raw herring wasn't worth searching :).

    cheers

  • Island Life: Abusage,

one of our managers loves to use the word "factoid", mistakenly believing it to mean a small fact

    A quantum fact even?

  • Island Life: Abusage,

, then maybe "quantum" is a reasonable term. It's a reasonable analogy with its scientific meaning, ...

Argh no, quantum means the smallest possible unit. If you were talking about NZ coinage 10 cents would now be the quantum because it's the smallest possible unit. You simple can't give 5 cents change because that unit doesn't exist.

In your example the change in energy levels is a quantum change because it's not possible to change half an energy level or two thirds the only possible change is one whole energy level.

So a change in user charges of anything more than 10 cents per whatever is NOT a quantum change/leap.

"I'll have a coffee, but only if you're making one."

The solution to this crime is to go away and make one coffee - and then drink it yourself!

  • Island Life: Abusage,

To self correct, apparently jorts have to be denim.

I was thinking of those awful shorts-like things US women seem to wear in malls in the US. Somehow always the wrong length.

  • Island Life: Abusage,

So we're talking about knee lwngth, denim shorts?

Nope not just denim. Often really crap material in such colours as pale yellow, light blue, soft pink, aqua etc. Any pastel colour will do.

BTW I didn't mean to suggest for a second that Americans had taste in clothes, taste of any kind. Just that there are times when ya know just some colour would be nice. I know black goes with everything but the idea is that you might have something other than black with black. And no charcoal doesn't count.

Oh and while I love the spell checker is there a way to make it stop suggesting that colour is spelt incorrectly?

Step one has been trying to stop wincing every time someone says 'different to'.

Soon you'll be indifferent to it

  • Island Life: Abusage,

I'm also trying to introduce colour into mens clothing, orange and yellow shirt is the limit so far.

Not just mens clothing, all NZ clothing, mens and womens.

We once took and American friend (yes some of them are nice it is a big country after all and there are bound to be some nice ones) to lunch in Auckland city and she looked around and asked "why is everyone wearing black? Did something bad happen?"

Oh and while you're at it can someone turn the A/C on in the TV newsroom so the presenters don't feel the need to deliver the news in their undies? They are nice undies usually but it's just a little off-putting, I can't help but thing it's not something Walter would have done :).

Is it OK if they spell it mischievious?

Be thankful you do not live in the USA where homes are burglarized and it's apparently necessary to point out that an arson is a fire.

  • Legal Beagle: Tastes like democracy,

    Hi

I don't mind long posts. I like reading especially if it's interesting and as your posts are and full of stuff I don't know.

    Voting must be secret.

Therefore everything Greame said is exactly right.

I'd much prefer election day to be the one day a year when all the shops shut and yes of course it should be a public "holiday".

Yes voting should be a community and social activity.

If electronic voting can be audited then why the hell not use it. But at the moment I'm not sure it can be audited as well as paper, although banks seem to manage. So let's stick with paper until the experts are happy with it. But paper or electronic it must be secret and hence needs to be at a location where that secrecy of choice can be assured.

For most people there are two opportunities to directly be involved in democracy - voting and jury duty. Both activities should be treated with respect and honoured. Both activities should be community focussed and the decision making process must be confidential.

    cheers
