  • Field Theory: Webstock and Wheels,

I had also met him the night before though I didn’t recognise him until he got up to speak: “Wait, Scott from last night was SCOTT MCCLOUD!!?”

Heh, I also didn't realise that guy was Scott McCloud. But not only that, I didn't know that Scott McCloud was the guy whose online comics I'd been casually admiring for years. That's one of the great things about Webstock - meeting legends of the webs, who are just doing their awesome thing without any Sheen-like delusions of grandeur.

  • Cracker: It's a Wonderful Thing, in reply to Danielle,

I noted on Twitter at the time that – much like the Pixies last year – there were pretty large numbers of heavily pregnant women in their 30s at that show.

Yes! Pregnant women and bald men - it's the new demographic for '90s survivors like the Chemical Bros and Pixies. Cool-mum and cool-dad music.

  • Cracker: It's a Wonderful Thing, in reply to JackElder,

Exit Planet Dust came out in 1995. If you were, say, 20 then, you’re 35 now, heading towards 36.

And if you’re 20 now, you would have been 5 years old when Exit Planet Dust Came out. It would be the equivalent of a 20-year-old Robyn or Jack seeing The Human League live in 1995. (Man, that would have been weird to have seen amongst all the crunchy guitar and jangly pop I was feasting on back then).

  • Cracker: It's a Wonderful Thing,

I think I need to clarify my "chippies = older person" comment.

I remember in the very early '80s, the things Bluebird made were called chippies, and the things you had on Friday night with fish were chips. Then, somehow, there was a change. The things in the packet were just chips, and the things in the newspaper were hot chips, or also just chips.

When I hear people say "chippies" today, it's usually people who are older than me. It's people of my parents' generation. There's nothing wrong with this! This is just what happens with language.

Biccie/biscuit/cookie is a whole different kettle of fush, and doesn't follow the same pattern as chips.

The Chemical Brothers, on the other hand, that's totally old-person music. Dad-electronica ;-)

  • Cracker: It's a Wonderful Thing, in reply to Damian Christie,

FYI, there is also, but kinda hidden (I’ll have a word) the full version of that archive piece (including many more verses of the piggy song)

Looking at more of the weight watchers class, it seems more like a class in developing an eating disorder. One of the women calmly talks about “cheating”, then “eat nothing” to catch up and ensure a loss. You know what’s more fun than going to a suburban hall every week and singing a song about how much of a fat pig you are? Eating cake, that’s what.

Also, I dig the formerly-fat angry sharpie chick at the beginning.

Haven’t looked to see if 7 is on demand. Hope so.

It's not hard to find out. In fact, maybe more than one person has already linked to it in this discussion.

  • Cracker: It's a Wonderful Thing,

The first episode is online. It's good - it's not just a "Look at all the funny old things! The past is a foreign place! Lolz!!!" There's reflection on today, and the sinking realisation that maybe things aren't actually going to get better. Go and watch it now.

    Highlights:

    - The '80s-era frumpy obese housewife shuffling around the supermarket smoking a cigarette. Smoking in a supermarket! In the 1980s!
    - The men's jogging club, who look exactly like the sort of men you see in jogging clubs today, complete with sideburns.
    - If medical professionals have been speaking out for decades about the problem with kids eating junk food, why did National scrap the no-junk-food-in-schools policy? Dicks.
    - The members of the Te Atatu Weight Watchers who gained weight being forced to sing: "I am big and fat and love my food. Oh, what a pig I am!" [WTF!]
    - The reminder that potato chips used to be called "chippies". I still hear older people use that term from time to time.
    - Sometimes when you see those headless shots to illustrate the obesity epidemic, it's actually just people wearing ill-fitting clothes.
    - I want a pie.

  • Hard News: What Now?, in reply to Islander,

Why not a transparent Cathedral spire?
Tempered glass and a wholly holy view?

I've been interested to discover that the cathedral spire has sustained previous earthquake damage and been rebuilt. Quakes in 1881, 1888 and 1901 damaged the spire, with the tip being rebuilt in timber and copper, lighter than the previous builds in brick and stone.

So perhaps it's now time for another tip for the spire to meet the needs of Christchurch 2011.

  • Hard News: Mind Blending,

Aw man - I've been waiting for this for three years, only to discover that the OGB is taking place the day after I jet off to a different timezone.

    Oh well.

But I'll tell you this - I will be at the Christchurch OGB.

  • Hard News: What Now?,

I have recently been made aware of the The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Memorial Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution aka, the Kobe Earthquake Museum. Apparently it has an earthquake simulator that is gruntier than the one at Te Papa. I think I'll have to pay a visit.
