My osteopath says the lower gears are good - more revolutions is better!

And your Osteopath wouldn't want you to have to be going back to them all the time would they? ;-)
I can't see why an Osteopath would say that. The faster you move your legs the more ware your joints would have, surely? Plus, if I have read the research correctly, the slower the muscle contractions the more efficient the muscle behaves, not to mention the lactic acid build-up. However, having said that I see more cyclists using the low gear option than the high gear one. Could that be because the low gear seems less effort it is perceived to be better when in fact the same amount of work is done either way?.

He's not the kind of man to accept your limits.

    Ouch, that's gotta hurt.
George, Darroch that is, or any other cycling aficionado.
Question. When cycling uphill is it better to be in the highest gear that allows you to stand on the pedals or the lowest possible gear without your legs disappearing into a blur?

    On Chrysler's bankruptcy,

When Chrysler emerges from bankruptcy, the United Auto Workers union will own 55 per cent of the automaker and the US government will own 8 per cent.

I don't believe the USSR had this level of Socialism in its heyday.

Yet another reason to never believe a word Garth says,

For I consider the bicycle to be the most inefficient, uncomfortable and unwieldy machine ever to have been invented.

    Bicycle Efficiency
As for comfort and wieldyness I think the bicycle has evolved a little since the penny farthing.

The Guardian's Simon Jenkins has a slightly different take on all this panic.

A couple from Airdrie who caught the flu on holiday in Cancun are getting better. That tends to happen to people who get flu, however much it may disappoint editors.

BTW, Emma, that "people" substitution trick is brilliant.

You obviously don't hang around socialists enough.

Shouldn't that read "You obviously don't hang around PEOPLE enough."

  • Hard News: Madness in Mt Albert,

I just read the Harold piece on Michael Cullen's valedictory speech . Clair Trevett quoted him as saying.

"a hatred of poverty - not of wealth, to which, within reason, we can all aspire - but of poverty with its grinding degradation and fundamental fairness".

Weheras what he actually said was

    ...............and fundamental unfairness".

So, are we to believe that Ms Trevett has the slightest understanding of the diference between Labour and National?.
