  • Hard News: The Social Retail,

Has anyone seen Sanguinello/Blood Oranges on sale in NZ, or know if they are grown in commercial quantities? I've become addicted to them and I don't think I could go back to regular when I return home.

How do the other big regional museums get their funding? It was my understanding that it was a combination of the host council and sometimes neighbouring councils.

If we are going to start some regular funding for museums nationally, in additional to the national museum in the capital then I'm only going to support this if Dunedin, Christchurch and other regional centres get similar support.

  • Speaker: A day or two at Dramfest,

I found Bank's book quite useful when I was in the Western Highlands last year, but that was perhaps more for the non whisky related tourist information. I would have never gone to Fort William or Glenfinnan or even hired a car to tour about the Highlands without his sales job.

Well it wouldn't be a recession without random weird movements - and "Going Galt" seems to be the current winner

  • Hard News: Not Helping,

While I love the cheeses available in Europe I can't help but think that one reason for this is surprise, surprise that despite the often incredibly bad smell, the cheese is still quite tasty and able to be stomached.

The first cheese I had from France was so pungent that when the fridge was opened the smell would briefly silence all conversation a minute or so later in the living room. For weeks no one knew where the smell was coming from and apparently assumed that one of us had done some rather awful but were too embarrassed to say so.

  • Hard News: Top of the Populism,

I am rather shocked by the cost of renting in that part of town. So commercial leases in that part of Wellington are holding up well, despite the Recession? I guess there hasn't been any large scale closure of businesses along the main business streets so far.

  • Hard News: Just shoot me,

The woman in question just had a session on the BBC1's flagship morning show. She got rather a soft going I think, but then I guess that is the nature of the show

The rule in the UK is that one must have some sort of binding agreement to allow reduction of hours or lay-off (reduction of a whole week), usually in the contract or a workforce agreement. If that clause exists then the employer can usually impose a variation in hours (in exchange for a small retainer like payment). This is based on longstanding practice and has been incorporated in the relevant employment legislation.

Perhaps the same is true in New Zealand already.
