  • Hard News: Crash and Contempt,

The Fed has no money for bailouts

I think it's more that they don't wish to engage in unneccesary bailouts. Lehman wasn't seen as having a risk of causing domino failure in the financial system.

Citigroup (for instance) would *have* to be bailed out, even if they had to double income tax to finance it.

  • Up Front: Mmmmmm, MMP,

what would you folks vote for..?

Firstly, I think it's more or less a fair system and shouldn't be messed with. Especially by a party that really wants to entrench itself by going back to FPP and stealing the Maori seats to boot.

However I'd suggest in order of radicalism:
    - Removing the dual vote, so that a voter's party vote went to the party of their electorate choice.

    - A fairly complicated (in the counting, rather than the voting stage) system of my own devising; involving a single vote, multi-member electorates and a proportionality adjustment. This would retain local representation, remove two-tier MPS and allow Maori (and any other non-regional) electorates without sacrificing fairness.

    - A plain list system with no electorates

Anderton isn't really an MMP beneficiary though, these days. He's basically a one-off independent MP. You could see him being an overhang this time.

If I lived in Wigram, I'd be wondering what to do with my electorate vote - Labour, probably, but would the National candidate have a better chance of unseating Anderton?

an entirely fanciful solution to The Schleswig-Holstein Question

A strip of Holstein 100m wide and crossing the peninsula to be ceded to New Zealand. The viceroyalty of this will be given as a bauble to the junior coalition partner in any NZ government. They will be able to build a viceregal palace there, within the limits of their 100m strip and without recourse to public funds.

I think the word "Kiwi" has it's place but is used about ten times as much as is appropriate. Conversely, when I hear DOC press releases about "saving Kiwi chicks" I always think of someone running after inadequately dressed young girls and getting them to put a coat on.

A lot of the time, the word "people" is appropriate instead, I think.

__(But then, I'm from the UK. There isn't actually an accepted word for us. Brit is semi-insulting; Briton sounds like one's wearing a layer of woad; while UKian is an stupid web-head construct.)_

Has anyone got a date for when Peter Dunne’s traditional surge in the polls is going to happen?

He's the 'voice of the silent majority' you know? Where "majority" equals betwwen zero and one percent of voters.

  • Hard News: Conscious Party,

Also, I guess there would be an easy way of the ISP paying the music makers for music accessed?

You mean on a precise "Carolyn downloaded Crazy Frog, send Harald Faltermeyer 10c" basis? Not really. They'd have to drill down into your traffic and work out what's going on. If a download site used encryption or an obscure protocol, then that wouldn't work. Plus it would be expensive and a privacy invasion.

It could be done on a statistical basis, like APRA payments, and that has been frequently proposed.

Is Black Sheep "cinema of unease"?

I'd be uneasy if being chased by a carnivorous genetically engineered sheep.
