  • Hard News: Friday Visions,

For many a year I’ve wondered to what extent grammar of this ilk is taken into account when grading ze international students’ work.

I usually correct the first page of an assignment, and leave it at that. It's not too onerous. However in the past few years I have been doing contract teaching in political theory, and very few international students take courses in such obscure topics. My current job is in a business school, and I am teaching a highly technical subject, so I may be in for a rude awakening.

Why does no one post opera, or at least opera singers, on Fridays?

The pictures are forgettable, but the extraordinary singing is not. Cecilia Bartoli has the most remarkable voice control.

  • Up Front: Fairy-Tale Autopsies, in reply to recordari,

I think there are about four potential places for "more".

Well, we could agree to disagree MORE, but MORE in the spirit of the thread, we could also argue MORE heatedly about this until we both look MORE like tremendous dicks to everyone else :)

  • Up Front: Fairy-Tale Autopsies, in reply to Emma Hart,

    @Emma

I have a new super-secret project in the offing

If that's what I think it is, then I 'm thrilled, because I have been dying to ask, but not wanting to get in the way and generally be a PITA.

  • Busytown: A new (old) sensation,

I've read only a handful of NZ writers over the last few years, and at least half of those were young adult novels (reading my daughters' books). I thought that The 10pm Question by Kate de Goldi was excellent. The story was a lovely slow reveal, little bit adding to little bit, until I became aware of what was going on. There is a resolution, but not a trite one, at all. I've also enjoyed various books by Margaret Mahy, and more recently, on my elder daughter's recommendation, The Transformation of Minna Hargreaves by Fleur Beale. A great coming of age story. I also enjoyed her Juno of Taris, to which there is apparently a sequel (this news has Ms Twelve squealing with delight).

I think this taps into what Jolisa said, that there's something joyful about young adult fiction. Especially young adult fiction without a vampire in sight.

  • Busytown: A new (old) sensation, in reply to recordari,

I think when Islander uses "ANZ", she is referring to "Aotearoa New Zealand".

  • Up Front: Where You From?,

None of yous, absolutely none of yous, beats Whangamomona as a place to be from.

Though to be honest, my parents left there when I was three, and moved around for a few years and settled finally in New Plymouth when I was eight. They're still living in the house they bought back in 1974, so for a long, long, time, "home" was always their place in New Plymouth. And when the occasion demands it, I can speak with a riul gud Turunuki acceun.

Having recently tripped back across the Tasman, this time I hope for good, I have found that home is New Zealand. I was bitterly homesick during our three years in Adelaide, and eventually told my partner that we simply had to find some way to come home. Perhaps part of the problem was that at 42, I was too entrenched in networks of family and friends to be able to remake home somewhere else. We have both been so much happier since coming home to ... (drum roll please)... Palmerston North.

  • Hard News: Mind Blending, in reply to Jolisa,

@Jolisa – e-mailed, but I’m not sure how recent the address I used is. I’m free later on Wednesday afternoon, but I have to get back up to Palmie that evening (cat, guinea pigs, get the car back to my employer…).

  • Hard News: Mind Blending,

Damn and blast. If it had been Wednesday 9 March, I could have made it, and if it had been Friday 11 March, I might just have been able to get there, but Thursday 10 March just isn't going to work at all.

I hope you all have a lovely time, and will someone please give Dr Haywood a hug for me.

  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?,

Oh my goodness. This is barking: Tim Selwyn on the earthquake

And as for the 144,000 left standing (Rev. 7:4) - that may well be Christchurch's population after this is over.

So the bad news is we're up to seal 6 of 7, good news is the seventh seal has another 7 sequences of events, before we get to the point where people don't feel the need to live in a city of temples, Rev. 21:22 "And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it."
