  • Island Life: Speaking boisterously to…,

I'm sure there will be plenty of liberal drinking in the PAS meet-up in Dunedin this even as well.

Third incident here. No police involvement in this one.

  • Speaker: What goes on tour,

I think it's two in as many months.

Was there the trespass notice incident (as opposed to police) as mentioned in D-Scream?

And I'm not wanting to discount 'substance abuse', but I sometimes wonder about whether it's drink exacerbating anger/the belief that fisticuffs is an appropriate solution. Say like Hayden Roulston.

  • Hard News: Spectacular but useless,

Graeme, Matthew compared cannabis to tobacco, not a joint to a cigarette. Comparing a cigarette to a joint is about as useful as comparing either of those to the kg of LSD mentioned in the report.
So if you can show some evidence that the physical harm of cannabis is worse than tobacco, then I'd be interested (because at least on my current reading, it doesn't appear to be true).

I do wonder what would happen if pot were, at the least, decriminalised and thus its use became a lot more prevalent. It's demonstrated to be physically more harmful than tobacco

Hi Matthew. Care to show some evidence for this? The Lancet report I mentioned above estimates that the physical harm from tobacco is higher. Additionally, that report suggests that the dependence associated with tobacco is higher, that even if both were legal, people are still going to smoke more cigarettes, and find it harder to stop using tobacco.

This graph is interesting, based on a paper in the Lancet. The colours represent suggested drug classes based on scientific merit, as outlined in this report to the house of commons (p.178).

I mean is there a part of StatisticsNZ that does a monthly street price survey?

It's only done annually, and not by StatisticsNZ. The report covers, pricing, availability, number of current users etc.

  • Hard News: Google Trending and MGMT,

There is Zoterp, which will take all the bibliographical information for you, but I don't think it has a 'send the librarians to work' function yet. Actually, I think it's secretly trying to put the librarians on the dole line.

Hmmm, I did wonder whether there was something already out there. Actually, Otago have a think called article linker, which will attempt to find what you're looking for in their e-journals and then provide a link for interloaning, but you still have to fill out the form. Except now I have Lazarus. For a former library staffer, I should be having less glee...

  • Hard News: Google Trending and MGMT,

I shall tell the guy who built it when he gets home from work, he'll be dead chuffed.

By all means do that. It had almost got to the point where I mostly couldn't be bothered interloaning items, because I couldn't be bothered filling out the form. Possibly the library found this a good thing. I'm sure they'd hate if someone had devised a widget that you could click on that would scrape bibilographic data from the webpage you're viewing and send it on to the library....

  • Hard News: Google Trending and MGMT,

I must have been hiding under a rock or something, but I missed the releases of Firefox 3. So I've downloaded, and just been pimping it out, with a new add-ons, including Lazarus by the team behind interclue. I really missed the form saving feature that disappeared sometime from Netscape, so I'm looking forward to having it back.

Was initially a little freaked out by the new URL/awesome bar. As someone who mostly types web addresses rather than using bookmarks, it was being pretty painful. Turns out that's because it's still building it's frecency (frequency+recency) data. So when I typed 'pu' expecting to get publicaddress.net/system as my first result, I was a little freaked out. However, it seems after a little retraining it will be great. Especially if you you have slightly less intuitive URLs (it took me a while to get the hang of typing 'fl' rather than 'ai' to get grabaseat for example -- because it's flightbookings.airnewzealand)
