Hmm. You might think that authors would be all for noses affixed firmly to books, particularly their own (books, I mean).

Novel-reading: turning good mothers into bad ones since ages ago
Interesting you say that. My mother says that in her early days of motherhood - in the 1960s - it was seen as wildly self-indulgent and feckless and lazy to be seen reading novels. I expect reading Cordon Bleu cookbooks or Dr Spock would have been quite OK though.

Well, if this is morphing into a general book club kind of thread, my main fictional discovery over the past year has been David Mitchell - I devoured Cloud Atlas, raced on through Black Swan Green, and am about to start on Ghostwritten. How many novels have their opening scenes on the Chatham Islands?

Purchased at the same time: Sarah Waters’ The Little Stranger. I love and have read and re-read everything else she’s written but this one presented a brick wall. Funny that.
I do so agree. Most people I know that have read this really enjoyed it, but I just found it infuriating. But The Night Watch was sensational, I thought.
Together with my little lad we have read quite a lot of pre-YA NZ fiction - of the boy-oriented variety. David Hill, Des Hunt, Jack Lasenby and co. I'll have to say I find them quite uneven - when they're on they're on, but there are a fair number of disappointments in there too.

Our flat in Puriri St, Riccarton, had mushrooms growing in the bathroom and was so damp that every so often huge chunks of plaster would detach from the ceiling and crash down.
It's been replaced by a townhouse now which is probably a good thing. -

Meh. I myself don't have a lot of time for people that don't vote, but I do take Lew's point above that the compulsory setup, as in Australia, may produce perverse outcomes.

People do not have a responsibility to vote. There are many valid reasons for not doing so.
They do in Australia plus a further 11 countries.

Yes, it was nicely done. JC has managed to make it clear that he was only apologising for his interview manners, not his assessment of KR's magic powers. HIs team did a grand demolition job too.
