A career in politics seems almost incompatible with being a hands-on parent. Male or female, you pretty much need a "wife" who can look after things while you're putting in the hard yards.
There was a doco on some years ago featuring the WAGS of pollies - John Tamahere's wife was the most telling - when asked how does she cope, she said:
"Just like any other solo mother."

Bryndwr suffers severe deprivation when it comes to vowels. Otherwise, not so much.
Where I come from "y" and "w" are perfectly servicable vowels.

Don't forget, when Key was growing up in a State House, they weren't slums and his family would have got govt. assistance.
They weren't slums at all around Burnside. They were pepper-potted through middle-class suburbs and everyone (mostly) went to the same school.
They're not slums in Auckland either (many, if you recall the Coddingtonswallop article in North & South) have satellite dishes on the roof!
BTW, I still think the BMW she photographed in a state house driveway was hers.

I've been in an elevator with Jason Gunn. It was a non event.
I spent the whole time perving at the woman he was with.Same here, except he was alone & I wished it was Hayley Holt instead.

Too bloody right. I have seen reality, and it has no satisfactory narrative structure. It just dribbles on and on and on until you fall in a hole at the end.
And there are nowhere near so many hot people.
