I decided I could do without my miserable pensioner’s bottle of whisky this week- which does show I esteem Keith’s work-
(have temporary eye-condition which means trawling through pages & pages isnt really an option…) -

I wanted to learn to play guitar (I sort of could, courtesy of a 1930s guitar my mother could sort of play.)
Aranui HS 1960 did have a music teacher (T.J. Kirk-Burnard who had been involved in overseas armies & was an alcoholic by the time his nadir -Aranui HS-
occurred) and he organised I could go learn to play a wind instrument of my choice(because I wasnt interested in brass)-
so, I wound up there- a wee bloke with a skinny beard and zilch people-skills was the teacher. It took me nearly 4 months to develop a lip (reed players will understand) and an aue! moment to realise that my lips preferred a softer reed
than teacher insisted on - and an eventual understanding that I wasnt a team player-loved the ambience of the building.
I would still take up the clarinet again (I have a large number of discs) if/when I could afford the instrument...

m a big fan of that. In particular, when you make TV, you learn how much art and craft your video editor brings to your report
When I was a TV director I learned that lesson fast – your editor makes the programme. Your job is to bring as much editable footage as you can-

Kia ora Mike - I didnt realise just what we'd seen - except they were koreke*- until many many years later. My 3 siblings of that time were then way too young to remember, and my cousin(Kai Tahu side) and my father, who was with us, are long dead.
It was an area of Canterbury that hadnt been burnt over (which is probably significant.) Pity portable cameras werent then generally available - but not even the 2 adults would've thought of them, then-*I absorbed Maori words better than any sponge does water - then-

Really, where? I know they existed but I’ve never even seen a picture of one.
In Canterbury (yes, largish area) and I remember it because the family member who called us all out to see the 5 birds (2 adults, 3 nearly-grown chicks) said, "You wont see these again." He knew his native birds...and the words were very strange to a 5 yr. old.
Buller's" Birds of NZ", and "Extinct Birds of NZ"(author/s/illustrator forgotten momentarily) have good pics. I'm away from home so cant direct you to pages et al. Weekend!
