  • Speaker: Telling Our Own Tales, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

The money men need to have the will to do it...
...and they don't see a return,
    not even as pro bono
    self publicity...

    their margins marginalise everyone else...

This and loss of this ability to tell local stories makes us more easily managed, or am I getting toooo cynical?

  • Speaker: On the upland road,

"That’s right, the framers of the OIA thought that information should be made increasingly available to people, and tied this to good governance and enhancing the respect for the law. Seems we have the opposite going on right now."

I've made a few OIA requests this year, attempting to find out about Funded Family Care. I've learned that requests are not answered any sooner than the 20 days legally allowed, and sometimes later. I've learned that officials use language such as "no document could be found" in their responses to OIA requests.

I've learned that the Ministry of Health asserts that its contracted agencies are not subject to the OIA (e.g. NASCs). This latter is now the subject of an investigation by the Ombudsman. The matter helps show the extent to which the OIA is being abused, and if steps are taken to strengthen the OIA, one of them needs to be clarification that all non-classified government activities are subject.

There must be a lot of agencies contracted to various ministries to carry out policy, I wonder if policy is implemented in this way partly to avoid scrutiny?

Potentially more deeply disconcerting WO and Ministerial collusion in Education sector, if true this is vile and reprehensible behaviour.

Rotten behaviour, if true. Full, wide ranging enquiry needed.

What an interesting approach on Campbell Live to actually get to hear the leaders of all the minor parties

It was actually worth watching and I was sufficiently motivated to go to the online continuation. I've stopped bothering with talk over sessions, they are too frustrating, just make me cross. Hope Campbell realises this is a good way to go, a lot of people don't like the talk over sessions.

  • Speaker: Election 2014: Mental Health Policies, in reply to Marc C,

Ms Benefit is at pains to ensure that her staff are not blamed. I don't think anyone is blaming them.
Ms Benefit states clearly that Tully got everything he was entitled to and even turned down some offered "assistance".
Ms Benefit is careful to avoid thinking or permitting anyone else to think that perhaps the assistance provided actually fell far far short of that which was needed.
Seriously ill, out in the cold and desperate after days of deprivation and pain. With no prospect of improvement in sight. Do you know how your thinking would change if you were in this situation? It is terrible that a person is injured and two are dead. It is terrible that a man was failed to such an extent in a wealthy country.
You are absolutely right, there is more behind all this and it should be exposed.
It is not good enough to say he had all the help he was entitled to. IT WASN'T ENOUGH!

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics,

I suppose though, that makes NZ first still less attractive to disillusioned Nats. If you are a National supporter who wants the party to disinfect itself what do you do? Vote for someone else, or not vote in the hope that failure to get re-elected will result in a clean up, one way or the other? I find it remarkable that Hooton still plans to vote National, how is that going to improve matters? Should they get re-elected it seems to me it would be much more difficult for them to get their house in order, some would see it as vindication.

I'm not saying that National have handled the economy badly but

I can't get over the frequent references to the state Labour left the economy in when we've gone from paying down debt and being indebted to the tune of (I haven't checked exactly) something like 10 billion, to constantly borrowing and owing about 60 billion. How is that good handling of the economy when there hasn't been employment growth either? Someone please correct my figures if they are badly out.

Once again Winston is able to take advantage of events to raise his profile and attractiveness to voters http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/10450053/Peters-bottom-line
We need the inquiry he's demanding.

I don’t have any problem with the investigating parties pulling facebook chat records (if they exist, via normal legal channels) to definitively prove whether or not the released chats are forgeries. That doesn’t feel like overreach and privacy violation to me – just normal investigative functions as a response to denial of the accuracy of the evidence.

Given that Slater and Collins are both outright denying all/any facebook discussions, it is likely to be necessary to use legal channels to check validity/veracity here.
