Regarding the kid that got beaten up, this happened to me when I was 17 or so. I knew the guy, reported it and the (UK) cops did take action and he got fined (and scared into mending his ways for fear of further life-stuffing-up stuff).
Assuming the lad didn't know who the miscreants were and didn't get a description, then there isn't really much to do. If you think the cops were being needlessly slack, then file a complaint.
I think as you get older this sort of thing stops happening - at least it has to me. Also, I think it happens in average suburban neighbourhoods. Classy places it doesn't happen coz the thugs aren't there. Actual bad places (like the East End of London where I used to live) you don't seem to get much trouble as the stakes are higher (random kid, or tooled up drug dealer?).

There's a really good student accomodation/hotel place called LivingSpace by SOL. Not only was it cheap, but the desk dude was really nice and tolerated having 15 pissed-up people in wierd clothes for a pre-party in my room.

What's good about PAS:
- There are fairly few wingnuts.
- Almost all of the comments are thoughtful and literate
- The volume is enough to retain interest while not overwhelming. -
surely it is best, ... for them to park around the edges
Best would be for them to take the train/bus.
Next best would be to build a big carpark with it's own exit ramp out by the stadium somewhere. $5 to park, $10 congestion charge if you continue into town. Free trolley shuttles included in the parking fee, or free skateboards.

I have no problems with those talkback callers having the fascist state they want. Only think is, it'd be a fascist state run by me.
Talkback callers would be starved and frozen in antarctic concentration camps. Provided with no food or adequate shelter, but a computer and telephone so that they broadcast and blog the story of their slow and painful death. Pour encourager les autres

I've had issues with Coop - 90% of the time they're perfect, 10% they stuff up.
That's what happens when you live in an urban sprawl dedicated to the motor car though. Takes 15 minutes to get from downtown Wellington to the airport. Sometimes they even have good enough weather to fly planes.
If they built a train link (or even a virtual train - a bus with dedicated road space and a reliable schedule) people could at least choose to live in a public transport accessible area and have a straightforward airport run.

On a related topic, is the $158k that NZ First are trying to dump on any charity that will take it "election spending"?
I'd reckon it is - as it's an attempt to curry favour with the electorate.

I've thought about a scooter but feel that rather than using it instead of my car I'd use it instead of walking. (I use my car to move stuff and for trips to the Hutt & beyond, both of which would be scooter/pointless).
I do like the Sachs Madass 125. It's like a mountain bike with a 125cc engine - I thought such a thing would be a scheme as a kid - the lightest frame possible with an engine on it. Only 10hp though, 25 would be more fun! But if I had one, I'd use it to get to work and Cuba St and would get fatter as a result.

BTW, here's the UK manual that sets out procedures for police use of firearms. I'm not sure whether an NZ equivalent exists or is a public document.

Why aren't all cars carrying firearms if some are?
Because best practice is to restrict firearms use to a specially trained and selected cadre with the skills for such situations.
