Collaboration.
One thing I have found is that NZ companies are great at getting on together just as soon as we step on a plane and try to sell overseas.
Here in NZ it is a different story. I think we feel the market is so small we need to fight tooth and nail for every opportunity. Whilst this might seem like the perfect free market I would argue that it is not.
There are lots of times when we very much need to be working together to provide the rich and varied solutions/services/products our clients need.
As a start I would welcome a series of forums (fora?) where companies who are on paper competitors get together and work out their differences. Along the lines of 'this is where we might compete, but hell this is where we don't - over to you'.

I/S - he probably called them idiots. Was that the reference you were looking for?

Even if they feel hard done by, I hope the rights holders can accept that the people protesting have been motivated by principle, rather than personality.
I never felt hard done by and I certainly accept the motivations you ascribe to the CFF.

I won't get into how ridicolous that comparison is, because I wouldn't mind a beer or two myself.
Actually, it was my poker bid. I'll see your strawman and raise ya.
Emma, the PA writer I feel most sorry for is Hadyn. He tries to have these serious sports discussions and we'all end up talking Lime in Coconut.

giovanni - it's Friday, getting late and I have had the benefit of a beer or two to aid my thinking. So let me answer your point clearly.
Yes.
But hey, if you and Chris want to go back to pre-penicillin cures for your ailments, be my guest.

That entertaining lawyer Chris. (Bless his cotton socks, salt of the Earth, love him to bits, yadda yadda.)
He would be funny *if* it were not for the fact that every.single.time a new technology has come along the same tired old saw has been rehashed.
Carnegie library? Ruining writers. Recording music on phonographs? Ruining musicians. Radio (wireless) ruining the world (and propagating communism, the kiddie porn of the day), TV, transistor radios, cassette tapes, VHS, CDs...your own memory. Oh wait. Let's see how they get on with the body hacks where we can store and playback anything through some implants in our heads.
Then they really will want to pwan us.

The way you measure and reward social impact for most things is through the sensible creation of property rights
On the other hand, market economies frown on monopolies. They create huge distortions. Dishing them out should be exceptional and managing their existence is something usually mandatory.

And is there such a thing as reverse blackout bingo? This page is a winner so far
Ben, please don't be so facile. I mentioned before that my avatar is the new black. Pay attention.

The police are an arm of the state. The state is controlled by "we the people".
Hollywood is not.

Big market here for a new player.... PirateNet anyone?
Well, given the growing peer to peer nature of what we currently call the internet it is not at all beyond the realms of possibility that such a provider springs up and is based overseas.
That's why basing legislation round a technical solution is silly.
