Rich of Obz said:
making jail sentences open only to violent crime and the most heinous dishonesty.
Couldn't agree more. I put it another way two years ago: "narrowly tailor the criminal law so as to prohibit only those activities which are manifestly incompatible with the rights of others in a free and democratic society."
No victim, no crime. And the victim has to be a real human being, not just a vaguely disconcerted 'community' (see: party pills).

It is all about them!

At the risk of being insensitive, the whole reaction of the Elim church people has seriously creeped me out. Is it just me, or is treating the death of your children primarily as some sort of test from God just further proof that all fundies of whatever religious persuasion have a tendency towards being death cults?
No, it's not just you, Tom. Let alone giving front-page credence to one survivor's belief that a deity personally intervened to suspend the laws of nature in order to save him (while neglecting to do the same for his mates and instructor). It's one thing for a survivor to think this. It's another for 'serious' media outlets to lend it respectability.

the feature about the woman who, when she is not having sex with strangers, works in PR.
Many would say that those two things are metaphorically exactly the same.
The two also seem to go hand-in-glove in a literal sense.

Who knew a country as small as New Zealand was simultaneously so crime-ridden and weather-afflicted?

Oh yes, and who in the Herald decided Mike bloody Moore would be their rent-a-quote? The man's no constitutional expert. He's not even articulate. Does he have the editor on speed dial for a weekly apoplectic outburst or something?

A good 10 days or so for Peters and his party. In the headlines almost constantly. I can almost picture him dancing a small jig, whilst singing "people are talking about me! people are talking about me!"
Should be good for 1 vote in 20, and a return to Parliament.

The former. Actually, my impression is probably based on the favourable social atmosphere in and around downtown Wellington. It probably helps that my last 3 visits were on glorious summer days. It will be a different proposition by July, no doubt.

I've always had a vague impression that Wellingtonians in general are always "gettin' some". There's something in the air, perhaps.
