Legal Beagle: MPs' Pay, in reply to
Inflation was kinda high in the 70s, huh?
for sure.
Next stop, comparisons to the median wage where data is available.
1978 MP salary $18,000 divided by average hourly wage (1979)$4.52= 3982.3 hrs
1979 MPs= 92 population=3137800 rep 34106
2012 MP salary $141800 divided by average hourly wage(2012)$26.92= 5267.5 hrs
2012 MPs=121 population=4561000 rep 37694So roughly and all perks aside, an MP's value is now 1285.2 average working hours (32 weeks) more (24%), The average* number of New Zealanders represented by each MP being roughly 10% higher.

I felt Jonah Lehrer perhaps overstated his case a little with:
"But there is a problem with brainstorming. It doesn’t work."
as highlighted here:
"Although this study is often cited as evidence that brainstorming does not work, it is important to emphasize that this study did not actually test the brainstorming guidelines since both experimental conditions used brainstorming. The factor under examination was group versus individual brainstorming."

Thanks for posting that Stephen, some fascinating observations on the stagnation of our culture and the pervading bureaucratic spirit. This paragraph in particular resonated:
"Then some laptop-wielding person in the corner, having performed a quick Google search, announces that this “new” idea is, in fact, an old one; it—or at least something vaguely similar—has already been tried. Either it failed, or it succeeded."

In what sense are the two incompatible?
totally compatible, only that the ‘discover’ button could be more transparently labelled ’picks’/ ’recommended” or something. This obfuscation misleads. On a plus note, the site is fast as lasers from here. and yeah, with Mr Codtail I think including the number of votes for each song wouldn’t be an objectionable improvement. You and Andrew’s report was great Russell, I'm pleased to see ideas being picked up, and Louie the Zu – yes! Very international.
