What does a 10% limit mean

I can answer that one. It means nothing. If 10 guys who are all mates get 4.9% each, that means that 49% is owned by something that works like a single entity, no matter what the theoretical limits on individual power are. There is never a safeguard against private deals between private owners. It's hard enough to safeguard against the government making private deals, any attempt to be privy to such things leads to potential criminal charges, as the teapot tape saga clearly showed.

  • Hard News: Sharing the Wealth,

Is it actually possible to legally do a #zumwohl on Saturday before 7pm? Can one talk about the elections in any way whatsoever?

Don't hang up on the robocall. Leave it off hook until it times out. That way it can't pester the next person. You might even be able to string it along if there are options you are meant to press.

I'd guess not all that high a percentage of the population would actively seek out a recording or transcript hosted offshore, but it's hard to avoid if it's leading the 6.00 news or printed on the front page.

Yup, it's down to the big boyz or it won't happen. Which means it won't happen. Which means in retrospect, the strategy of aggressively hiding something that is hardly even news has paid off dividends for National, mostly because no voters are swayed by the tea scandal, and nothing else was being covered in great depth. It checked the steep decline their polling was indicating.

It's not over yet, though. Undecideds can swing the government either way. Two days could also be a long time in politics.

It's pretty easy to stop people commenting on your wall. go to Privacy Settings, How You Connect and set Who can post on your Wall? to Only Me.

    Where's Privacy Settings? :-)

ETA: Found it, it's a menu item off the unnamed inverted triangle next to Home. So all I have to do to be safe is set it up so Only Me can post on my wall, and Only Me can read the comments by others, and I've effectively made Facebook into a way for people to send me private messages.

What it effectively means is that any sort of resolution won't happen before Saturday.

Unless the quantum superposition of the privacy of the conversation collapses by someone just hardening up and posting it in its naked glory.

The plaintiffs application, for a declaration of the discussion between the Prime Minister, the Hon, John Key, and the ACT Party candidate for Epsom, John Banks, at the Urban Cafe on the 11th November 2011 was not a "private conversation" as defined in S216A of the Crimes Act 1961, is declined

    Parse that and stay fashionable.

Personally I'm happy with the government selling assets - we should be flexible and be willing to sell something that we don't need to buy something that we want. But this policy is truly awful.

Yes, in theory, it's doable. If we owned massive state assets in high fashion retailing, I would have little qualms about using that money for something else. But not assets that are the very lifeblood of the nation, the power that literally drives it, keeps people warm and able to see at night, able to cook and shower, use their electronic appliances. It powers industry and commerce. This power is also a very complex blend of different supply mechanisms which must be coordinated, rather than at war with one another. Furthermore, they use scarce shared resources, which are the business of every NZer to have the a say in the use of.

I think that if the Nats get in, though, they will ignore the unpopularity of this particular plank, claiming it as their main mandate. If they do this, it is going to be an absolute bonanza time for merchant bankers. There are most certainly going to be a small number of extremely rich people who make obscene fortunes, and this can't possibly go unnoticed.
