We would gain incentive to demonstrably improve our carbon efficiency, because we will be losing market share based on how polluting our industries are. It is the sort of thing the world should be doing more of.
Try telling that to Federated Farmers. If they felt the full force of Waxman-Markey, do you really think they'd get the impetus to go green? Or would they rather scorch-earth their fields and pump full of lead the first American/Eurolander they see on sight?

I recall a certain ChCh-based Libertarianz candidate, several years ago, rather disingenuously putting all the blame for binge-drinking on 6pm bar closing regulations. In fact, lager loutism was around long before that, having been imported with the first settlers who landed here.

Yeah, they are going to bring in a carbon tax.
What's NZ to do if it was on the receiving end of the above?

There is nothing more "smarmier" than a right of centre self-made man/woman who then enters parliament a la John Banks, Paula Bennett and ACT MPs. They seem to think that a) everyone can/should emulate their achievements and b) they have a superior world view and c) tend to (maybe unconsciously) disenfranchise those very same groups from whence they came, for not emulating them.
As I previously mentioned, climbing the social ladder then taking the ladder with them. Hypocrisy to the power of 1E6.

The CoSR came across as more nanny statist than anything the Clark Govt could ever try hard to come up with.

Paul I don't entirely agree with this with regards to NZ education. I would say the back to basics drive here started as soon as National were voted in and they began to instigate their standards regime which will mean schools will have to focus on numeracy and literacy standards and then report on them.
Are we headed for the kind of system the Japanese are moving away from?
and how we live in a money-credit-controlled society.
Things would probably have to go Irish or Icelandic to jolt the Jones-keeper-uppers back to reality.

Field's sanctimonious religious posturing has already damned him as a card-carrying scoundrel, and Clark's failure to cut him loose the moment he started to stink is a blot on her career.
Privately she probably would have given him the boot at the first opportunity, if it wouldn't have led to a hung parliament.
Yes, better give money to private schools than provide for disabled kids. You're all class.
