O glory!
That is one of the frightening pictures all kids should know (posts to the grand nevvies/nieces- hmm, and their parents, and my mother-whooosh!) -
Geez Joe! Wonderously awful!

Just Thinking-cool! We call those family/friends hui- Matariki and big birthdays, and Hogmanay, & golden wedding anniversaries (one happening in the family this week):takiaue & season openings and birth & death bonfires...social & seasonal celebrations which are hugely sad or enjoyable. greatly momentous & important to those involved - and totally irreligious. And entirely human-

I am totally in favour of freedom of choice for both abortion and voluntary euthanasia - for sane adults (or, when it's a matter of abortion for raped
child or adolescent females, their independent non-religious guides/guardians.)I'd continue this right to euthanasia (and it will become so) for those who have made a living will (which means you have designated trusted people to act on your behalf when you no longer can.)
Humans are a socially creative & inventive primate. Religion along with caste systems are the most toxic things we've so far come up with-

Kia ora Sacha- there is both an OTAGO tartan and an ANZ tartan (both formally registered.) The ANZ one is grey & charcoal/black & white (I have a formal kilt made in this tartan)and the Otago one (which I think is what Peter means by the Dunedin tartan)incorporates yellpw & blue.
For some strange reason.

Joe- yep!

One of the edgy matters about 'soft-science' research is a necessary reliance on anecdata.
Parents say this/kids say thus and the variables are *huge*.
I can only offer 2 kinds of anecdata:
1: life experience: you whack any animal often. you get a fearful cowed beast - or a sullen vengeful one. You do not get a healthily functioning animal.
2: what is deemed 'reasonable corporal punishment'(legally, societally) on human animals will be endured & shrugged off by some; resented and twist (in many different ways)a majority of others, and destroy/warp entirely a few.
I am only talking about physical abuse, and realise there are several other kinds (religious indoctrination for a not-normally mentioned e.g.)
There is no good scientific evidence that ANY kind of corporal punishment (there are a lot of others aside from smacking/beating/whacking -deprivation of food/comfort/normal contact etc.)does anything good to/for the inflicted. It is a matter of dominance, subjection, and control.

Bart Jannsen - cool. Last looked into this 3 years ago, and obviously, much more tasty stuff published. Between you & dyan & refs, I'll get up to layperson speed -many thanks both!

dyan campbell, many thanks indeed for all the epigenetic links. As soon as I am home (next week) I will read, & digest.

dyan - thanks for the links.
There is a huge lack of references on both sites-
