and more of a culture of white male entittlement than NZ did i.e. that being rich makes people have greater social value - this is about he opposite of the old NZ values

Laurie Penny in the New Statesman called out those who deny rape culture unless it's "people of colour" perpetrating it. Not surprisingly, the comments section (the link seems to have been removed due to abuse) was flooded full of "cultural Marxist misandrist white genocide SJW" epithets from the usual suspects. And this was before one of the German rape cases turned out to have been concocted by Kremlin elements.

One thing the Roastbusters business showed was that the schools involved failed badly to do that.

A friend’s daughter was caught up on the edges of that scene, and it was a real mess of distorted perceptions of what was right and wrong. She and others were bullied and intimidated by girls close to the perpetrators to stay silent. The abysmal police investigation and the attempts by the schools to brush it under the carpet further validated and locked that in. It was bad in so, so many ways.

How close is it to Royal effing Commission material?

When the incident first erupted, the first thought that sprang to mind was the type of people who act with impunity, with the full knowledge that money and connections will simply buy them a good supply of get-out-of-jail-free cards. It ties in with the 'snob yob' thing I previously mentioned upthread.

Another angle on this, it’s fucking enraging seeing women in the media being told to “toughen up” or get out of the profession when subjected to male arsehattery. Again.

It’s 2016, boys, and a woman’s place in the media isn’t writing about scones and this season’s hem-lengths. Just stop it.

Even though I’m of the testosteroned gender, the Laneway dicks remind me of the snob yobbos who gave me hell in secondary school.

And if/when the Return of Kings rabble come to NZ, here's the perfect welcoming gift.

The two guys proudly gave their names in the TV3 follow up piece: Sean Philip and Thomas Insel. If TV3 can track them down then I’m sure the NZ Police will have no problem

I sometimes wonder how many of these yobbos are 'snob yobs' who combine the worst aspects of old money and new money - getting up to criminal mischief, getting off scot-free and getting away with saying to the authorities, "my dad's a rich-lister who pays your taxes!" More recently we've had the vandalism antics of the Oxford Bullingdon Club.

But still, dickheads will be dickheads.

What's changed this time round is that dickheadery has been given undeserved respectability by shock-jocks, among other vapid blowhards.

And regarding the declining attendance of the Wellington Sevens, the usual suspects are blaming wowsers for ruining it. No, wowsers didn't ruin the Sevens, hooligans did.

Or perhaps a better way of saying it is: If we truly want to see the end of the Me Me Me philosophy, we have to start with ourselves.

It's unfortunate that sometimes, only a major crisis like a bubble burst has to remind certain people of it. There'll always be a hard core of narcissists, but thankfully they're hopefully just a fringe movement.

  • Speaker: What Star Wars can teach us…,

Just look at the resistance to decent public transport and higher density housing in Auckland.

Both seem to be interlinked to rentier self-interest in the housing bubble. If it bursts, it’ll hopefully be the fatal weakness of the current orthodoxy… or it could go the other way, and those caught in the fallout could go Trump and blame all their problems on everyone below them.

And it’s a LOT easier to get funding, supporters and media coverage when we break things down to simple black and white messages.

Such as bumper-sticker rhetoric like “build the Mexican wall!” or “ban Muslim immigration”?

Perfectly reasonable people deny climate change, I suspect because they’ve been fed the lie that addressing it means forcing them to surrender their houses, cars, barbecues, and other tenets of the ‘middle NZ lifestyle’.

It all neatly ties into the ‘divide, divert & dehumanise’ propaganda of the guilty parties.

Even though I'm unlikely to benefit from the First Three Years policy, I still look forward to the boosting of apprenticeships. In any case, I don't want NZ to devolve into an Idiocracy in the long run. Still, when education is reduced from a public good to a perishable good, divide-and-rule dogma will have left its mark.

Attracting an intelligent and diverse audience is much harder. Witness the number of dead-end blogs which litter the net, languishing down dark alleys with little foot traffic and no real relevance.

Hell yes. Most blogs are just pissing into the wind unless they have access to the best possible money and connections to amplify their views. What we have right now is the best free speech money can buy, where the 'establishment' view has little to counterweight it.
