    Och!

Vote for the same word! So obvious. And, to quote Mr Tiso,

    "Credit crunch"... meh

    won..!

But I'm glad credit (of the non-crunch kind) was given where it was due: when roflnui turns up in the OED it can clearly sourced to Sacha.

  • Field Theory: The Return,

As far as Chris is concerned I've wodered whether he started out, back at the beginning, trying find evidence for what was quite a common opinion: that Henry shouldn't've returned after the RWC. After a few wins he found himself with this angle to himself, a point of difference to his pieces, but has since followed the angle so far he's arrived in another dimension.

    Let. It. Go. Chris.

  • Public Address Word of the Year 2008,

Returning to wordsof the year, another mention of Mr President-elect:

    Blunder.

As in Obama damning The Surge with the faint praise as a "tactical adjustment to a stategic blunder." It just makes for a devastating description...

    Welcome back Keith!

See what happens when you don't blog an election..?

On the National/Act policy tango, I think National is more than happy to have someone pushing them on right wing issues as moving to the centre would've been an uncomfortable necessity to many in the party and its supporters.

And if National takes the teeth out of a right wing policy it can say "See: we are centre right." And if they go along with it they can say ""See: we are centre right."

Act wants the action and they're getting but are going to have to watch they don't talk themselves into a corner if they're raising the volume on Issues National knows are poll poison.

Sweetie, if you can get into his house then the thing to do is to paint the underside of all his furniture with natural yoghurt. It's a slow but insidious revenge.

If you can't get into his house, you'll just have to fill his car with Space Invader.

This is not something I advocate, I hasten to add. I'm just saying.

Well, I was going to suggest a 'Garage Sale 7am Saturday' sign in front of your noisy next-doors as a final act but I see you're an experienced hand in suburban guerilla tatics...

  • Hard News: Poll Crunch,

    Craig:

On Hagel: Agreed, a voice of sanity and a Republican one at that was welcome. And there maybe very good reasons for his ineffectiveness, with the party giving him just enough leash not to throttle his voice but no more. After all, the Bush/Cheney hasn't been shy with stonewalling all and every investigation it's questionable whether Hagel would've acheived any better accountability.

On Palin: Yeah, I've been following that conversation among the US blog - if not the rabid - but what I see is much grougwork being laid for the Republican Party having A. Long. Hard. Look. at itself and what it's become. Most talk during the credit crisis has been between the financial and social conservative divide in the party but I see it may be more of a small 'c' conservative vs. Conservative debate. Not being able to rely on The Base plus a bit and having to talk more moderately would - I believe - exclude Palin as a pick. Also, failed Vice-Presidental Cadidates aren't genreally considered kindly... (Yes: this all with the caveat of reading this from afar but, just like blogs, an obsessive concentration on US politics has taken me some way to learn which voices are worth listening to...).

  • Hard News: Poll Crunch,

While Hagel may be given credit for some rational criticisms of the US direction these last 8 years, there has been some criticism of him (in blogs and opinion columns I confess I can't trach down immediately) of the limited and ineffective actions he's taken given his prominent roles in the Senate Global Climate Change Observer Group, Senate Oversight Task Force and member of Senate Foreign Relations, Banking and the Select Committee on Intelligence among others. Non-binding resolutions really don't cut much mustard. And then there's the non-disclosure of CEO position of a voting machine manufacturer in his Nebraska elections.
