  • Random Play: Politics on the pages,

I'm fairly sure you could be convicted of stealing a free magazine if it was without the owners consent and you intended to permanently deprive the, etc. The owner is allowed to control the manner of its distribution.

Anyways, even if the Falun Gong *were* a political organisation determined to bring down the Chinese government and impose some wierd quasi-religious state, unless they are stockpiling weapons to do so, then they're fully entitled to do so here in NZ. Because we're one of those funny democratic places.

I wonder if Craccum have thought of calling the cops to bust the anti-FG kids. As above, they could. I bet it would really piss of Auckland Uni though - disturbing their revenu sources and so on. A good reason to do it, really.

  • OnPoint: Brownlee: Now 93.5% fact-free!,

The pseudo-market thing for electricity is dumb, especially when over 80% plus of the suppliers to the "market" are simply different arms of the state.

It would be perfectly possible to develop a model that calculates the optimum usage of generating capacity to minimise CO2 emissions and/or energy cost while maintaining reliable supply. More effecient resource allocation, and if they gave it a (read-only, natch) web interface you could log in and watch it working.

  • Hard News: Psst! Got any Earl Grey?,

If you want a drug for a trivial medical complaint, like a headache or indigestion, you can choose from a wide variety that have been tested and documented.

If you want one for fun, you have a choice of two (which have been extensively tested and found to be thoroughly harmful, of course).

Should anyone go through the effort of properly characterising methylone, synephrine or whatever, then no doubt Jim would ban it. This is almost completely independent of harm. Remember, Jim "would ban alcohol if [he] could" so *anything* is pretty much fair game.

Policy is not driven by wanting to prevent people gobbling hazardous substances all the time - policy is driven by an irrational belief that it's morally wrong to use psychoactive substances for "fun".

I suspect a lot of these new recreational substances will be largely placebo, really.

  • Hard News: Ya rly,

Does anyone have any clue why I can't send attachments?

Unlikely to be anything to do with your ISP.

Basically, if you use a mail client like Outlook (or Pegasus, etc, etc) when you send an email with attachments, it "encodes" the attachments into a block of text (which is all Internet email handles) and sends it to the email server, which forwards it to the recipients.

If you use Gmail (hotmail, etc), everything like that is done inside Google's website.

The only way your ISP could affect this process would be if they have some sort of "security" feature that strips attachments out.

Do you get an error when you try and add an attachment, or do they just not appear at the far end?

  • Hard News: Ya rly,

How wasn't Peter Brown elected? The 5.7% of people stupid enough to vote for NZF got them 7 seats (exactly in proportion to the vote).

  • Hard News: New on the Street,

Some of my friends have just moved to Horokiwi (9km from downtown Wellington, so hardly the other side of the black stump).

They don't get broadband due to the dialup setup, so are having to look at various alternative options.

In my view, if the backblocks areas aren't going to be disadvantaged, Telecom's obligation to service everyone (98% of everyone anyway) needs to extend to broadband. If Telecom, as the monopoly incumbent, doesn't have the motivation or technology then they should pay for the cost of getting service from someone who does.

  • Hard News: Slumpy Cashflow,

What I want to know is, when living off the land in New Zealand, how do I make mochachinos.

Cocoa and coffee beans grown under glass?

    (and no Baldrick recipes!)

  • Hard News: Slumpy Cashflow,

The problem with us all having a house on a quarter acre section is that it leaves us with (as has already happened in Auckland) a city stretching to the horizon and a multi-hour commute from outer-suburb home to outer-suburb work. That sort of density leaves public transport hopelessly uneconomic, not to mention creating communities that require a car to reach any kind of facilities.

Eventually, you wind up with "edge slums" as happens in Sydney and LA - places which are part of the city but don't have any decent jobs in their travel-to-work area.

  • Hard News: Slumpy Cashflow,

I reckon the government now uses immigration like the OCR - as a macroeconomic lever, but without the consideration and control that goes into the reserve bank

That would be more sensible than what they actually do, which is to mount a kneejerk response everytime Winston plays the race card.

  • Hard News: Slumpy Cashflow,

    not illegal and NOT FRAUD

That's because our level of securities industry regulation is grossly inadequate. In the UK (and I think most of the EU) it's illegal to operate a securities business (which the miscreant is doing) without proper licensing and compliance. But here we have this dumbass belief that one disbarred accountant working from a room above a dairy should be allowed to operate a bank/broker with zero controls.

    Stupid.
