  • Hard News: Every scene needs its stars,

Internet History - Ahh the Good old Days of Usenet (alt.tasteless anyone?). I did miss some of these as the text-based services died (when did xtra stop carrying them anyway?) and the flame wars and spamming became intolerable.

Moved up from the BBS world to an Actrix unix account in 1991, when they offered an actual unix prompt to use over the 1200 baud connection. I don't think I've had a *nix login since which is probably a good thing.

    I

  • Busytown: Front, man,

My son (10yo) has suddenly started tuning in to Radio Live. Not so bad, except that in the school holidays he gets to listen to M.Laws while lego building.

This makes me uncomfortable. Perhaps I need to convince him to change to a classic rock station?

  • Hard News: The Beautiful Pants,

I'd be more impressed if someone could speed up a Sigur Ros and make a kick-arse pop song out of their easy-listening snore music.

  • Legal Beagle: Absent Members,

I thought that they whole $10 story was rather pointless. Surely Carter is getting much more 'punishment' by Labour leader and party than any sort of hand-smacking by the speaker.

Focussing on attendence is rather pointless, anyone who cares can find out which MP's are doing a decent job by looking locally and at resources which are already available (although I note that CC has been purged from the Labour website)

  • Hard News: Watching the Watchmen,

But does publishing people's tax records - for no obvious reason - really constitute "opening up information" as opposed to "being dicks"?

Or, if you are an Afghani who has helped the US Army, does having your name published on Wikileaks really constitute "opening up information" as opposed to "being dead meat"?

    Recordari: Those were good!

I think I've watched every episode. I'd say the last season or so has been a little week as things try to wrap up. it was better earlier when there were new themes to explore, but hey, there are worse things to watch, right?

It's all entertainment, not a religion.

  • OnPoint: Budget 2010: What’d you expect?,

will be interesting to see how many parents are forced out of work by the cuts to childhood education subsidies.

one of my workmates has decided against more children for that very reason.

pity you can't just let the little fckers out to roam around a paddock like you can your average equine investment.

How did people cope in all the generations before that particular Labour bribe anyway?

    Maybe they used rocking horses?

So, whilst it is lovely if individuals, rich and poor, donate an extra proportion of their income to worthy causes we can only guarantee that this will be effective on a large and sustainable basis if everyone gets taxed on the same basis. There is no point in individuals "paying more" if they chose to do so, the marginal effect is negligible.

So, what Julie is really saying is that since she wants to pay more tax, everyone else has to as well? I can see how well that line of argument will work. I guess we will all have to wait for the next leftwards election swing in 2017 or so to find out its true efficacy.

I wish PAS had been around when Dr Cullen introduced the 39 cent rate back in 2000. No doubt it would have been cheers and beers all around.

I'd be quite happy to pay more tax.

As with Sam Morgan, you are welcome to make additional direct payments

  • Hard News: A bigger breach?,

I have been travelling in the USA for the last three weeks. I used the BART train system in SF and the Amtrak routes in and out of SF too. To buy tickets just insert your credit card in this handy machine. No authentication required. None. I think I remember doing this in Europe too.

This is fairly common in the USA, including Subway stores and gas stations.

I was dealing with my bank on the phone a couple of weeks ago, and they suggested getting a second credit card with a low limit to use for internet transactions and similar.
