  • Hard News: Life Goes On,

it would be madness to require the fund managers to divest foreign holdings at the present time

Were they asking for divestment, or simply suggesting that 40% of all new funds should be dedicated to the NZ sharemarket?

I'm guessing you have no immediate plans to float PAS Enterprises, Russell?

  • The Candidates do "Stand-Up",

Don't you wish our lot could be this good? I thought Obama did a great job (altho' second half is a bit slow)

McCain does his bit too, and has a good appreciation of 'timing':

And then Palin does a bit on Saturday Night Live (2 clips, via Huffington Post)

    see them here

I thought Palin was particularly stunning on SNL (much as I hate her politics) her performance skills are great - compare hers with Alec Baldwin, who couldn't even look at her. (Maybe he was just reading an autocue)

  • Hard News: Life Goes On,

The story pointed out that by 2025 the 40% of the fund that National wants to force into local investment will by be $43.6 billion: bigger than the entire market cap of the NZX-50 plus the expected value of Fonterra were it to be floated and quotes a string of specialists pouring scorn on the policy.

You give full marks to Labour for quickly 'fixing' the shortcomings of their policy, but assume National's is set in stone?

Whilst I'd agree that National should have actually said so, I'm pretty sure that they didn't mean for the policy to run forever. Like Labour's bank deposit insurance scheme, these ideas are only for the short term to increase confidence.

I actually like the idea of our Super Fund investing in the NZ share market for the next few years. Gawd knows no-one else is going to. I always found it odd that Cullen was advocating for kiwis to get out of the property market a few years back and to start investing in the NZ sharemarket; and yet the Super Fund was sending most of its money offshore. And when kiwi investors started doing likewise, Cullen introduce a new tax regime to deter kiwi investors from buying foriegn (Aussie excluded) shares.

  • Legal Beagle: Things that aren't true,

    from today's Washington Post

The Bush administration issued a pair of secret memos to the CIA in 2003 and 2004 that explicitly endorsed the agency's use of interrogation techniques such as waterboarding against al-Qaeda suspects -- documents prompted by worries among intelligence officials about a possible backlash if details of the program became public.

The classified memos, which have not been previously disclosed, were requested by...

  • Speaker: Objects to Remember With,

And after 150 years of this, you end up with Auckland.

I was paused at the lights on Cook Street the other day, just outside Police Central, and took a moment to take in the view up and down Hobson Street.

For those that don't know Auckland, Hobson Street is the highest ridge in the CBD. And it is lined (littered) with a dozen very tall very cheap high density crap apartment blocks. All of them 'shoebox' apartments.

And I thought to myself: what a frikken waste of prime real estate. What an indictment on our council that they allowed these cheap-arse crapholes to be built. Nevermind the financial crisis, these were our canaries in the mine. We should have realised back then that a 'free unregulated market' will not produce the best products for consumers. They will be produce whatever will produce the best (ie quickest) profit.

  • Island Life: We are all Chinese now,

The mentality in the NZ dairy sector appears the same as Wall St. or the City. Fast profits and bugger everyone else when it all (inevitably) collapses. They could have chosen to go down the low-input, organic path, but they chose not to because it would have meant less money in the short term.

That is Capitalism, in a nutshell. Make money today, because who knows what will happen tomorrow? And by Jove, The Market has just proved them right again...

(Not that I agree. I believe in Govt regulation)

  • Discussion: On Copyright,

But Mark, the problem is precisely that you can't stop people making unlimited numbers of copies, as soon as one copy is publicly available. Lockin' it away is stable door, oops, the horse is already dogfood.

Yes. Anyone else discovered their Facebook photo's pilfered by others? I'm not a musician, so this (the pilfering) has put it (the copyright issue) into perspective for me. It just rankles when you see something you created taken wholesale like that. I post these pictures for people to enjoy, but then I see them on someone else's page, listed under "their" album, with no credit to me. And with Facebook it's Six Degrees of Separation in reverse. My photos are spinning off into deep space and I have zero chance of holding on to them.

  • Up Front: Just Answer the Question,

I'd seat Tame Iti next to Graham Capill. He'd punch Capill hard in the gut and then stand over him and piss in his mouth while he's gasping for breath. Damned paedophile deserves nothing less. (Lest anyone forget why he's in jail).

  • Island Life: Nats to the rescue,

In a parallel universe (where kids are interested in politics) someone would be posting a clip of that Talkover Fest onto YouTube under the heading Sainsbury Gets Owned.

Did no-one tell him he was the Moderator?

  • Hard News: Rationalisation is at hand!,

I look forward to your campaign to have the age of consent raised to 18, John.

And maybe those proposing that Youth be enfranchised would have more success if they asked for the voting age to be lowered to 16, not 12.
