  • Southerly: Everybody Needs Good Neighbours,

As a taxpayer, I'd be quite happy if someone did a study on this.

My son has been in Prague and he says that over there they have a list of names you can choose from. Not sure we need to go that far but I feel sorry for some of the kids I teach and the names they are given and have to live with for the rest of their life.

  • Southerly: Everybody Needs Good Neighbours,

our staffroom decided that 'Dylan' was the ultimate for this.

or Jared. Female equivalent? Teaching certainly limits naming your own kids after a while.

  • Southerly: Everybody Needs Good Neighbours,

It was like she thought they were voice-controlled toys. The classic was when she yelled "Jaaaydin .... JAAY-DIN ... STOP STANDING STILL!".

I'm not surprised she yelled at them with a name like that. In my teaching experience certain names crop up as always presenting challenges in the classroom. Jaydin/Jayden/Jaydan is one of them.
Worst neighbours we had played AC/DC at 2 in the morning while they played darts in the room next to our house. They didn't really fit the Taradale mould and weren't there long, mainly cos they weren't supposed to be there having inherited the lease.

  • Hard News: Ideology for Evidence,

So it really does discourage people taking risks with their employment and moving into new fields, physical locations.

I think this will be a consequence that hasn't really been explored. In my profession I can see teachers staying put in their schools for a long time rather than risk applying for a new position and then finding they don't fit. Then there's the possibility some children could have 3 teachers in one year. Both scenarios are long shots but could happen and are not good for education.
And doing a bit of a cross post here is anyone else becoming sickened by the matey relationship Key (thinks he) has with Richie M and the rest of the AB's. I know they're playing well but I'm starting to hope we don't win the World Cup next year because the Nats will ride it all the way to the polls.

  • Hard News: Wanna Route?,

Here in Napier the council have had enough foresight to set up a cycle/walk way that goes from Bayview into Napier along the seafront then along the Marine parade to link with the Hastings cycleways with a few diversions along riverbanks. All flat and well used. On a good day it's a great ride/walk alongside the sea. Napier is conducive to cycling being mainly flat with wide roads and well marked cycle lanes. The only problem for me on my cycle to school is the amount of broken glass in the cycle lanes. Some people just don't care.

  • Speaker: KICK IT! Goodbye England's Rose…,

Yes. And make five year olds play. I mean so long as it's goals you want. (I can hardly tolerate that age group 'seagulling'. The prospect of adults doing it is chilling.

No off side rule seems to work in hockey-a game similar to football in a lot of ways.

The only solace I find in this budget is that they are going back on last year's budget announcement on cutting $45 million from the teacher staffing budget. This will no longer happen.
