  • Field Theory: This one has rugby in it,

I say this as a Waikato fan, but I'd be happy to see the bottom four teams demoted at the end of this season. Given that there is automatic relegation/promotion happening at the end of a season, it is not impossible for any of the S14 unions to be relegated at some point in the future - and there's no reason to shield them from it now.

Likewise, if Tasman (or Counties, or Manawatu etc) finish 9th but get dropped based on "other factors" - will the NZRU also move to block their re-entry to the top division via promotion?

Drop the bottom 4, and let them scrap to get back into the top if they're good enough.

  • Field Theory: Those Jamaican Yams,

The problem with the 4x100m is that he has to rely on three other sprinters to get a record.

(Hi Megan! It was good to meet you)

  • Field Theory: Those Jamaican Yams,

In other news, Bolt has done it again. 19.19 seconds, .11 seconds faster than the previous world record.

5 Races (Including Beijing), 5 golds, 5 world records.

The man is a freak. No one that big should be able to start as well as he does.

  • Field Theory: The Canterbury Tapes,

Hadyn, wherefore art thou? BoP beat Wellington and Usain Bolt is some sort of Demigod, but still no post?!

  • Field Theory: Shut Up and Skate,

    Great article, Hadyn.

I haven't been to training for far too long and I'm sorry I missed you, but I hope to be donning my moniker (and skates) again in the near future, just as soon as Miss Genocide pops! I trust you'll be in the crowd come September.

  • Field Theory: Excusez-moi?,

Why? Everyone else seems to be moving toward using the number 8 as an extra back. I mean, Spies is a reformed winger!

And have you seen Spies? The man is a monster. If he were still on the wing, we would probably be comparing him a bit to Jonah (cept Jonah was taller and was crap on defense).

    In terms of Tri-Nations,
    Spies.
    Gap.
    Hodgson.
    Daylight.

I'd get Kankowski in there somewhere as well.

    But I otherwise agree.

And ScottY/Kyle: Fair enough. But as far as I can tell, he's also the best option at the moment by far, unless you want to see Thomas Waldrom in the All Blacks - and surely we're not that desperate?

  • Field Theory: Excusez-moi?,

    NO! NO! NO!

    NEVER AGAIN!

A sentiment I hear often, but please tell me which other NZ #8 came close to his form in the last 3 months?

The Chiefs loosies destroyed the Hurricanes twice in a fortnight, including the much-hyped Victor Vito, Ritchies All Blacks backup - Scott Waldrom, and Rodney So'oialo.

So, please, a response that is a bit more considered than the shrieking on 'your views'.

Once you rule out Sivivatu, who's next in line as a #8 in NZ though?

I assume you mean Lauaki - and who knows? But given the circumstances, couldn't it perhaps be worthwhile to call Lauaki into the squad? Four blindsides and one openside do not a loose-trio make.

Except he's playing numbers 6 and 8 in their wrong positions.

Nah, Kaino was rubbish when he played 8 for the All Blacks last year, and was considerably better on the blindside.

Not to say that Read is going to be any better, and I do wonder why Henry picked four specialist 6's and no 8's in his squad.
