  • Capture: Laneway 2014 + Lorde,

Even if she hadn't been, really, 20 minutes late is nothing in the scheme of things.
I thought she was brilliant - her presence is amazing, and she's very natural with the crowd. So much more confidence and so assured.
I don't know much about music, but I know what I like. And for someone like me who tends to be a bit stuck in me ways (although I like a good beat), that's a pretty big thing. Also, as I have said to a couple of people, last night was the first time I have been to a music gig in the evening, with kids. It was enormously good fun. Tweens - Misses 9, and 11 yr olds - were witty, and excited, and danced up a storm. I will never go to a concert unless there's kids there. Makes for a much nicer crowd by and large, too.
    A++, would concert again.

  • Speaker: Need,

The pantry is officially empty. One of my lovely tweeps did a huge shop for Refuge just after Xmas, and all that food is gone. To fill the pantry, and another cupboard, it was over $400.
People have been sending supermarket vouchers (Countdown is the closest one) and that’s just amazing, but I’d like to fill the pantry up! (It’s a bit of an obsession)
The Refuge gets donated bread, and the women are provided milk/tea/coffee
The women have been sharing meals – they haven’t been really able to do that too much till now and it’s making a really big difference in relationships, and settling new women in, too. They’ve been able to do that with noodles, meat, and vegies from the garden. And they seem to be using the pantry canned goods for lunches (tinned spaghetti, tinned meals etc – there are still heaps of cans of baked beans which they aren’t so keen on.)
So: you can help by either sending supermarket vouchers to the Refuge directly, or maybe doing an online shop and getting it delivered to Refuge. Just email me and I will give you the details, and if you want to do this, will get your details too, so you can let me know when the delivery is being made, and I can let the women know.
(They’re a bit fed up with people just turning up with no warning.)

  • Speaker: Need, in reply to Morgan Nichol,

I didn't answer this correctly at the time, Morgan. We'll be setting up a givealittle page. We're just waiting for the accountant of the Refuge to register with the Telecom Foundation first. Make things more official, like.
The first board meeting is at the end of January so I expect to hear soon what's happening around that.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Backwards and Forwards,

I'd like to put this right here as my contribution to Friday Music. I am most terribly proud of my brother - he's the tall one - and all his musical endeavours, and here's his latest. He and Andy Lovegrove wrote and produced all this music together over two cities and a couple of years.
So here it is, streaming free from the Herald website for just one week.

  • Speaker: Need,

Hail, fellow travellers well met. One of the residents is moving out this weekend, and has just asked me if I would be able to get her a TV. This is a constant need - with such a small house and so many kids to keep busy, sometimes a TV is just the thing. There's a small one in the lounge, but none of the tellies are digital or have freeview capability, so the women are reliant on DVDS, and players (if they can get hold of one.) So that's a need we have to address.
In the meantime if anyone in Auckland has a digital telly they want to pass on, or a telly/freeview box they no longer need, please let me know. Thanks!

  • Speaker: Need,

I would like to publicly acknowledge dear reader, Carol Edmonds, who so kindly not only donated bedding and towels to the Refuge, but also bought the kids lollies (which were gobbled up immediately) and dollies and teddybears of a very stylish variety. B (3) has the dolly, and M (4 yr old boy) and W (2 yr old boy) have the wee teddies, and they are so delighted with them.
I'd also like to thank Hilary Stace for putting her sister Rachel, in touch with me - such a treasure trove, that garage. Everything is so much appreciated, and will all find good homes.
I have written a blog post detailing some of the womens' stories, with their full permission. I want to thank you all, and assure you that everything you do for these women, and for me, helps in really practical and useful ways.

  • Speaker: Need,

I have updated the needs list here and yesterday I took L to her very first eye exam. Here's a bit of her story, as told to me.

  • Speaker: Need,

M arrived at Refuge yesterday. She needs nothing but our love and support.

She's pretty scared, right about now.

  • Speaker: Need,

Does anyone want to do some painting? We're going to paint the Refuge lounge, and all of the paint has been kindly donated. Please email me.
