police can arrest someone who commits a crime. And they don’t have to follow thru with prosecuting them

But they have to let them go as soon as practicable, or charge them with something and then have the judge agree they should be remanded in custody. Giving up that set of rights in order to simplify the process of indefinitely imprisoning people who are mentally ill does not seem like a good idea. On several grounds.

  • Speaker: School donations: a small step…,

This deserves ... frontlove? Whatever the opposite of backlash is.
Doing it this way should (as you point out) help allay the pressure on parents to donate, and reduce the pressure on schools to ask for and chase those donations. So it's more than just 'extra funding for low decile schools', it's less pressure on those involved as well. Very cunning wellbeing measure!

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics, in reply to Neil,

Repealing and replacing the Mental Health Act sounds straight forward

While I agree that the act isn't great, I am also concerned that we have a classic "something must be done, this is something" moment in the making. Hopefully this will be something that disappears into committee for a decent amount of consideration before reappearing more fully-fledged.

    rebooting the door open.

My ex-gf recently left a plastic item on the stovetop when she went out, and apparently there was an element on. The fire brigade used their universal key to get in.

Maybe I should borrow that, rather than boots?

  • Speaker: Are we seeing the end of MSM,…, in reply to Sacha,

I can’t see strapped media organisations turning up their noses at free stories.

I can. You may have noticed in Australia recently that large chunks of the media became very explicitly partisan. There is no free anything that they would publish unless it suited their agenda (and in many cases they're not profitable anyway).

But more broadly, stories no-one wants to read aren't worth the effort of adding to the outlet (even if free editorial-management is also provided), because zero extra attention divided by any amount of cost at all = zero return on investment.

Well, it's more like how many users would we get from that month of developer time, vs what else could the developer do in a month. The answer "one" is technically better than "none" but it's still not going to get a developer assigned to the task. For that I need over a thousand, preferably more, or a major new customer.

I have seen a dual boot phone but rebooting to get into the office just seems painful.

    buying an ubuntu phone

I would love one but in order to get into work I have to run either an Android app or an IPhone one. The mobile team have not taken my request for a Linux app seriously, apparently it's an even stupider idea than a Windows phone version.

  • Hard News: Music: Some deep belief, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

Yeah. I still remember seeing the NDTs in Nelson is a long, narrow bar with the stage in the middle. It was a weird venue, and having their full-on brass section in a tiny space was an experience.

And trying to hitchhike out of Dunedin with "standing in the rain" in my head. It just seemed appropriate. "far distant hillside" and the weather...

  • Speaker: The economics of shit speech,

The guys replacing my roof managed to come up with a great one the other day: “open ya brain”. Sadly most of their discussion is not up to that level.

I do love a good band name, especially the hard-to-write ones. Why Shayne didn’t ever do a solo performance as the Singlehappy is beyond me. And I still reflexively put LBGPEP2 when asked my favourite album. Wired is another band who have a way with the album names, IBTABA for example, and of course 12XU. And who could ever forget Wreck Small Speakers on Expensive Stereos? A certain type of person had to buy the record purely because of the name...
