Hard News: What about that Welfare…, in reply to
I thought it was an symbolic Suck.com-style link, imply that the WWG's recommendations were the explosion that would trap beneficiaries in the mine shaft of poverty.

I heard part of a press conference where someone (my back was to the telly so I didn't see his name) was imploring people to not assume they can send in a rescuer in firefighting gear.
The different is, if a firefighter goes into a building on fire, while there may be dangerous gasses and heat, if things get really bad, he can quickly get out through a window or door. But if you're 3km inside the earth, it's a lot harder to make a quick escape.
The Herald's Your Views page is amusing in that most of the criticism of the police seems to be that they're not acting like rescuers act in movies or in TV dramas.

Hard News: Where nature may win, in reply to
"Missing" implies that they might have wandered off down the road to the pub and just not told anyone. "Trapped" is more specific. And, sadly, bodies can be trapped too :-(

Hard News: Healing the family feud, in reply to
My favourite thing about the Philippines Got Talent clip isn't just BM's bombastic performance, it's the judges comments afterwards. Specifically, I really dig how they effortlessly switch between Filipino and Philippine English (and a smattering of French).
It makes me wish New Zealand could be simultaneously bilingual in te reo Maori and te reo Pakeha.

It has quite a different impact with the asterisks.

I'm not sure what I'm more excited about - winning the Trons prize or the bangin' new LEDs track (and news of a new album)! It's chur-pants Friday.

Hard News: The Engagement, in reply to
Back then, "Robin" was my proper name. I legally changed it when I was 15.

You know what? I'd really like a Wills 'n' Kate engagement coffee mug.

Yeah, it's all very different to Charles and Diana's wedding. We can assume that Kate is not a medically certified virgin (ugh - I can't believe that shit used to go on). Wills and Kate's relationship seems more like Charles and Camilla than Charles and Di. Thank God.
I surprised myself by getting rool emotional this morning when I learned of the wedding news - the same sort of reaction I'd have if I'd heard some friends were to wed. So, yay, it's not a shitty marriage of convenience. More like a long-term couple finally getting hitched as they approach their 30s. Lots of my friends have done this.
Meanwhile, I'll have to create an artwork to celebrate this wedding. In 1981 I drew a painting of the yellow-haired princess getting married. Unknown to me, my grandma sent it off to Buckingham Palace, and I was thrilled to receive an official response. So, watch out Princess Kate - I'm-a gonna paint u.
