  • Hard News: The Public Bad,

Thanks Russell- and you're right Sacha - but almost all my most single malt goodies are travelling over the hill (where I hope to spend at least half a year for the rest of my life - probably curled up in my mother's cellar :)-
here's to (raising a wobbly flute) Marian Evans! (glug) Miriama Evans! (slosh) and the late and much missed Doctor Irihapeti Ramsden! (quench - well, that's that bottle finished then) because without Spiral collective 5 - which was them -nothing much would have ever happened with that paticular book...

the best way for me to commemorarate the dead is to take a dram (O look! we just happen to have a wee bit of Lagavulin left here afterall!)
and go out towards the beach end where those koukou are calling so energetically, and pledge a troth to life - Slainthe! Kia ora! L'chaim! Prosit! Kempei! Tatou katoa!

  • Hard News: The Public Bad,

Lagavulin is the official sacrament of the Okarito Free Republic' the Frog is the quaffing water-of-life (it's available for $60ish south.) That is, we anoint new borns' heads - o no we dont! we drink it ourselves! with Lagavulin, and we drink La Frog on more ordinary special occaisions.
Celebrate with me good folk! It is, this day, the 25th year since 'tbp' was launched upon an unsuspecting world. Whoever would've thought it would turn up in Czechoslovakian?

And I'm drinking it - and all family & friends good health - in

    ur, Lindauer Special Reserve??

  • Hard News: The Public Bad,

ooo drools over Peter's listings-have 'em,love 'em, share 'em with cognoscenti but- mark taslov, I'd also reccommend Highland Park (person of Orkney descent speaking) and the Talisker, paticularly if you can get hold of some of the earlier ones (15yrold is blessed.)

I was thinking - hey, writing is a shit job, nobody loves us and we're all soon to subsumed within a Kindle - all these people talking about t-shirts. Y'know: set up an instant sloganed t-shirt business, right?
    Bugger me. Cafe whatever-it-is-

  • Hard News: Emma Hart is a werewolf,

Joe, one of my uncles was a psychopaedic nurse. He trained and worked at Templeton, and in the late 1960s, having helped my mother as much as he could, he headed to Canada. He experienced the 'emptying out' there, and arrived home again in the late 1980s just to see it start happening here.

We all know there were occaisions of abuse in State institutions (I think such institutions draw a certain kind of abuser whether they be run by State or religions.) But - a lot of halfway-house situations dont seem to have worked (I only know about the West Coast situation) and a lot of extremely vulnerable people - who *were* looked after at Templeton Farm School for instance- have totally fallen through the cracks.

  • Hard News: Emma Hart is a werewolf,

Kia ora katoa- my midwife sisters have corrected me - it was anenocephalics who were quietly left aside. My bad. Apologies.
Microcephalics - pinheads - can live and breathe & --- but they're not functioning humans/people.

And I agree o the Grok - I think - as a nation - we've done the best we could at the time for the severely intellectually impaired, and the mentally diseased ( and I use the latter term advisedly: some of my family have mental diseases - and they do feel dis-eased...)

  • Hard News: Emma Hart is a werewolf,

Kia ora Hilary - microcephalics have NO portion of their brains that enable them to act -let alone think- as people. Most of them cant even breathe by themselves. Two of my remaining sisters are midwives. It was common practice to set microcephalics aside, make them comfortable (however that was construed), and leave them to die naturally.

The second part of your post I totally agree with. Most of my family - I mean the adults! - have made living wills, power of attorney coda, and other instructions to deal with "what I want done when death comes."

We love life. We know death happens to us all. We do the best we can, meantime-

  • Speaker: Copyright Must Change,

Actually Mark Harris- the more tourist dollars have come into South Westland - the HIGHER our rates have become! For the simple reason, that there was little infrastructure developed to cope with increased tourism onflow (literal in the case of toilets. And rubbish) so both District and Regional councils have upped their take off residents hugely.

There has been *very* little evidence of value for ratepayers in Big O
-and none at all from a WCRegional Council perspective - so your argument holds neither water or stinkier material.
