Britain also has its own sizeable tradition of film & TV IP.
Britain also have a sizable tradition of using film making for tax rorts. See here for an explanation, and here and here for examples.
I’ve read probably half-a-dozen news articles on this over the last 10-15 years. It’s a perennial issue that the UK papers occasionally get their teeth into when there’s no royal weddings or similar to distract them. Although there’s been some tightening up, it’s still possible with the current UK rules to bang out a total stinker on the cheap, with no expectation of any box office, and yet make a considerable profit at the expense of the taxpayer.

this comment is copyright me. You may not copy it for any purpose including viewing. Hey, you, Russell and his hosting company (but not your ISP) just broke the law!
Actually, you probably waived your rights under Russell's terms and conditions of site use. And good luck arguing that the copy I made in my head when reading you comment was an infringing copy. You could try sending a takedown letter. Attach it to a bottle of rum and I'm sure it'll have the desired effect.

What about that jetpack thing?
Ductedfanpack thing. #engineeringpedant
I don't think it holds up as a good example to support your argument. I don't know the specifics, but it appears to me that that company runs on, comparatively, the smell of an oily rag: 3-4 guys working out of a shed out in the wops. Even so, I'm extremely impressed they managed to get it to this stage. They must've run themselves ragged to get support and funding. They're an exception, not the rule - you don't tend to hear about the ones that fail because they just fade away as the money runs out.

So, what kind of license fee has SyFy been paying to pick up The Almighty Johnsons, which rated well enough in the UK to be picked up by the corporate mothership for broadcast next year?
Also available to stream on Netflix.

living in Sydney, or anywhere in Australia for that matter, there’s a level of acceptance of police corruption that I’d never experienced in NZ.
Was quite gobsmacking to me when I lived there for a year or so in the mid-90's. Although I'm not quite sure if 'acceptance' is exactly the right word. While most people live with it, they don't like it. That's partial, but not full, acceptance.
Thre was an article on police corruption in Brisbane a few years back in (I think) The Listener. Can't find it on line. Partly written as a response to the 'it's better over there, why don't we move' attitude of many Kiwis.

As for pronouncing foreign names, look at least try. But it can be very hard and most folks accept that it’s hard but if you try most folks will appreciate that.

Herald-loathers can’t really be serious about comparing the two?
The problem is that whaleoil seems to act as a convenient conduit for a lot of stuff that subsequently gets picked up by the herald. That way they get to pretend they're not living in the sewer, just swept along by a tide that it would be remiss of them not to report on.

Yep, she's getting some traction here, but Mark's correct - 28th Oct.
