  • Hard News: The Minister's Brain Has Exploded, in reply to 3410,

    Just... why?

Yeah, I felt like that when watching Obama's victory speech live, then we had a live cross to some kiwi reporter standing outside the White House who was attempting to summarize what we could have just .. fucking ... watched! Appalling.

It would be interesting to hear what he and Sneddon would say about the Govt’s handling of the RWC if they could be completely candid.

I expect that will come after the cup is finished.

    Snap, Tom.

Did anyone else see "The Games", the comedy series starring John Clarke. It seemed like one that would have been ripe to adapt to here.

  • Hard News: The Minister's Brain Has Exploded,

Yes, it seems like massive overkill for an event that wasn't a disaster, quite the opposite. In fact, it seems banana republic, as parodied here.

  • Field Theory: Straight for the throat, in reply to Sacha,

Don't forget "it was a game of two halves" and "she's a funny old game" (or is that a cricket cliche?)

ETA: But yes, I do like to see opposition credited, and good games acknowledged to be good for the sport. However obvious they are: They're a bit like "hello" and "goodbye" as talking rituals.

  • Field Theory: Four Years Ago, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

In amongst all McCully's finger-pointing, Dave Dobbyn must be relieved he hasn't been blamed for the breakdown of the waterfront event... ;- )

Well, considering I was part of the sudden press to get to the other side of the big screen that was working, and I only did it to see Dobbyn, it can't be long. But blame me? Hell no. I'm apparently an unwitting victim of organizational incompetence, and the only dispute is who the buck stops with. Council, Cup organizers, Government, international capitalism, the patriarchy?

I'm quite surprised to hear of incidents towards the Maori procession, although they were certainly crowded. Also surprised to hear about drunks and cigarette butts, since I saw a grand total of one smoker, and didn't see any alcoholic drinks on display at all. The waka were moored in the Viaduct, so perhaps people from the bars got to them, in which case bar security were extremely remiss in allowing them to leave with drinks in hand. In fact, studying my own photos of the viaduct, all of the waka are at least 15 feet away from the crowd, so how they came to get cigarette butts in them is beyond me, unless the crowd were unleashed onto the actual landings at some point, which I find extremely unlikely. Beer bottles would have to have been thrown in from a distance. There are no independent reports of any unruliness like this, so it sounds a lot like exaggeration to me. Considering there were upwards of 100,000 cameras in the area at the time, I'll start believing it when I see some of it.

I have never seen any value in these hurried, made-for-media, post game cliche grabs.

Considering I always wait for them before I consider the coverage finished, I guess that means I do. It's reality TV, people feeling genuine emotion talking straight. I wouldn't have anything against a more considered media debrief later on, but as part of the show, it's actually quite important. It happens in every sport, although some do show more compassion for the loser, who can refuse - this is common in boxing, where the loser is often in a pretty sorry state physically and emotionally.

I think it goes to sportsmanship, frankly, that people are seen to be human after the matches, full of exaltation or disappointment, and yet giving their spiel nonetheless. It's often the most interesting commentary of the entire match.

Whilst I empathize with Warburton and wouldn't have wanted to be in his shoes

I understand the sense of disappointment, truly, but he was still the captain of a rugby world cup team who played an excellent game, so his shoes aren't that bad to be in. They're still odds on to make it to the quarters.

  • Field Theory: Straight for the throat,

I recall the post game interview smacking of extreme disappointment - it was not enough that Wales and particularly Warburton put on an amazing performance. Not then, anyway. I hope a warm shower and some after game beers might have put a different spin on it later.

FWIW, the South African captain sounded pretty bitter too. Lots for them to learn from that game.

Weren't interviews usually conducted in the entrance to the dressing room in the past, rather than in front of a flimsy perspex wall of advertising?

    I think that's long odds.

Seems like long odds whether the incident actually happened at all.

Any bets to lay on who the Minister for Bad Manners is? My money is on Wayne Mapp.
