Nowhere near as stupid as keeping the privatised telco vertically integrated, thereby turning it into the Ma Bell of the South Pacific. At least Ma Bell had the saving grace of its world-renowned research division.

Mark: politics aside, good blogs have a high signal-to-noise ratio. In other words, not a harbour for bile and puerile name-calling, unlike another well-known blog we're familiar with. The owner of that blog may be a reasonable guy, but unfortunately most of its repsondents don't know when to quit the playground sandpit.
At least in a blog like PA, you're less likely to have a label bull-branded on your forehead.

I know exactly what & where the 'ad agency' building is, I pass it by on the way to work on a week-daily basis. Very much a product of its time.That corner where the fruit supply was, it's been earmarked for an apartment block.

.At the time The Oaks opened, it was regarded as being an excellent piece of architectural design. Even David Kernohan liked it (Wellington's New Buildings, VUW Press, 1989). I recently uncovered a set of photographs I had taken of its interior for a first-year university assignment back in 1986. It did look very sophisticated with its clean white lines and masses of potted vines and ferns in the central atrium tumbling down from the upper level. Now the place is a falling-apart rusting hulk that looks like it could do with a bulldozer through it.
And it was a Warren-Mahoney design, too. Why do some 'first-rate architectural designs' age more gracefully than others? The MFC was designed by the same people, but it's aged quite well. Is the Oaks centre more than just a case of benign neglect?

Negative, if they settle in McMansions in Whitby or Clevedon and drive Explorers/Range Rovers to work. Positive, if they live in city apartments and don't drive a car.

Has Mr Key made the fibre announcement because of unbundling, or in spite of it?
Personally I'd like to see at least some of the money used to buy a cornerstone shareholding in Chorus, as opposed to a subsidy. That would probably reinforce the "Chinese wall" between infrastructure and services.
