I haven't made up my mind on the 'Baden-Wurttemberg' version of MMP, but it's seems worth looking into.
Nevertheless, I think I'm pretty much in agreement with Keir over the disquiet over the "list" aspect to MMP. The list is one way in which the party indicates what sort of party they are; if you vote for that party, you vote for the type of party that makes that kind of list. If you don't like that they put Douglas, or whomever, on their list, maybe you shouldn't be supporting them.

Saw headline,...
"Oh, yes. There will be blood."
Frankly, I'd rather go to "Saw 5" than to a high school reunion.

Russell's mention of no code reminded me of the song 'Mankind' from Pearl Jam. Here's a you tube vid with the song and an odd and slightly creepy image, (presumably from an anti-smoking campaign?) ...

Phasers I can take or leave; I was thinking more along the lines of one memorable weapon from Iain Banks' Consider Phlebas , which converted from a pendant into a tiny, silent-firing lacework pistol - with the firepower of a grenade launcher. Probably wouldn't work right on film though.
Also, if I recall, they only had one shot.

I don't recall the ad easton refers to, but in internal communications the BNZ were always referring to that campaign as being one aimed at reducing domestic violence and abuse in general.
That's what you get when you take a case against a bank, I guess.
The banks' have lost a few couple of big cases recently. I guess you don't see many private cases against a bank go to court, because the Banking Ombudsman is the generally the better option. Anyway, I doubt the costs were awarded against Easton because of the bank's highly paid lawyers, so much as it was just so obviously a silly case.

Anyway, the point still stands- Hoberman is a great critic.
I liked his review of Inglorious Basterds. Nice to see him suggest that in a way it is more a Western, and even science fiction (that thought occurred to me, too), than war movie.

Nearly everyone likes District 9, right? Can you think of who might really, really not like it?
"Instead, District 9 illustrates the strange new state of racial and political identity. It suggests some lingering Afrikaans’ fear or, possibly, how Jackson really thinks about the Maori and Aborigines."

Steve Parks - XY intersex people are frequently brought up as female (especially if the genitalia are tiny/ambiguous or some parts surgically removed in infanthood...approximately 1 in 1000 people are intersex individuals.
Thanks, Islander. Yes, I completely concede to the point Lucy and you made on that. I was just being flippant, because I couldn't be bothered responding seriously to the point by Andre, about Gen X & Y women who feel entitled to "everything". Next time I can't be bothered addressing a point properly, I'll go back to my standard reaction and have a shot of whiskey.

Repellent!
Oh, wait, I was looking at the O'Reilly clip...

X & Y women
There are no X & Y women, they're X X.
I reckon they just don't want to be tied down.
Depends, but wrong thread for that discussion.
