  • Hard News: A cog in the Mediaworks machine, in reply to simon g,

Plunkett’s decline has been rather sad. He was once a rigorous interviewer and before that, capable reporter. But whenever I’ve heard him on Radio Live he’s been practically begging people to call, and trying to sound Outraged because it’s talkback and that’s what you do. He seems like a classic case of trying to fit into the wrong job, and degrading himself in the process.

How is it that Russell Brown and John Campbell manage to 'keep the faith', but Sean Plunket doesn't?

They even have their own supposedly-libertarian MP, going by the name of David Seymour.

I've asked this question before, but if a Manhattan-style apartment was planned for Epsom, would David Seymour use the RMA that he wants watered down to block it?

Has David Hay rejoined the Greens after his one-year expulsion?

Is that the same David Hay who’s previously been involved with the CitRats? Or are there 2 of them?

  • Hard News: The Message,

When Christine Fletcher won the Auckland Mayoralty in 1998, she kept her post as Epsom MP until the 1999 general election. Stones and glass houses come to mind.

But it wasn’t until a man named William Bennett became the first ever ‘Drug Czar’, that the conflict took off. Bennett, with his policies driven by fear and moral conservatism, turned America’s law enforcement apparatus into a machine for chewing up human — mainly Black and Latin — lives.

Where there's smoke there's fire. William Bennett also happens to think gangsta rap (not that I'm a diehard fan of it) and video games are right down there with weed.

  • Polity: A hazy, intriguing crystal ball, in reply to Hilary Stace,

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some kind of major world recession before the next election. Probably not the collapse of capitalism, but enough for people to question some of their assumptions. It could be linked to the realisation that we all have to do something urgently and drastically to mitigate the worst effects of climate change.

On that note, the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment has sounded the alarm. It could be the first pin held to the NZ housing bubble.

And I'm curious to know how many 'floating voters' prefer Labour to go with NZF instead of the Greens, or even the unlikely case of an outright Labour majority or a Labour-National grand coalition.

This Independent piece indicates France’s still festering relationship with Algeria is somewhat of an ongoing own goal in the battle against IS.

On top of that, the French Govt used Algeria as a nuclear testing ground before the days of Mururoa Atoll.

Note Herald site is still giving assorted error messages – The APN-branded one, 503 (internal server error) and just plain not responding to requests. No doubt the Herald IT people are on to it and it will settle down in due course. (It’s probably a cluster of web servers of which only one/some are down)

Apparently that’s down to the Jonah Lomu death story overloading the servers.

  • Hard News: Something we ignore at our peril,

PS: That was a very important report from a programme about to be shitcanned by TV3’s management. We might want to think about that too.

It'd look rather crass and hypocritical if Weldon and Christie ditch 3D, while at the same time going completely sunk-cost on what's left of Scout. Bonus points if they go cap in hand (again) to the Beehive.

  • Hard News: Stories: Home,

Home for me is any place that provides a tolerant cosmopolitan environment. Wellington, where I grew up and later moved back to over a decade ago, fits the bill nicely for a city of its size.
