That’s the claim yes – backed up I expect by evidence.
Evidence that Rodney Hide sent "dodgy texts" to a young woman, or was putting an allegation of sexual harassment out there just acceptable collateral damage? I think that's a perfectly legitimate question to ask of Hager, whether you like Hide or not. And given Slater's rather irregular relationship with the truth, I don't think it's unreasonable to hope Hager did some due diligence on what he decided to publish.

It’s an allegation of a grievous abuse of ministerial power to help out a mate. And he declares he won’t even ask?
I know this is probably going to be an unpopular thing to say, but if he did "ask" (whatever the hell that means) wouldn't you be lining up to accuse him of political interference if the outcome wasn't to your liking?
That said, I just don't understand why she isn't being stood down since she's effectively a caretaker minister until after the election anyway.

Well yes. Accusing someone of hacking (a criminal offence) is libellous unless demonstrably true. It’s likely Slater will have to front up in court and produce any evidence he might have.
Oh, the irony – it burns. There's some weird aside in the Three News lead about claims that Slater threatened to "blackmail" Rodney Hide over "dirty texts". If this the tenor of the thing, I wonder if Hager isn't going to have some 'splaining of his own to do.

I know politicos will say other stuff is worse but Joe Public doesn’t really care. But playing with people’s lives is different.
And I think you're really onto something here -- look at the Leveson Inquiry. Honestly, I'm not proud to admit it, because the way a lot of celebs and members of the Royal family were treated was abso-frigging-loutely disgraceful, but it was Milly Dowler's mother's testimony that was the real gut punch. I think most of us can just empathize more with the mother of a murdered child than Hugh Grant or Tony Blair.

Golly, we're agreeing on something. Stop it before the internet implodes. :) But you're right, and I guess I've got to be fair too -- not entirely reasonable for me to expect anyone in the media to run the bullshit detector over a book largely based on the correspondence of someone whose relationship with facts is... not exactly intimate at the best of times. Hager and Slater might be positively gleeful about the prospect of being sued for defamation (all publicity is good publicity as long as they get your name right?) but I can understand other media outlets being more cautious.

Morning Report interesting. Nothing to see here, move right along. Govts have to feed journalists and bloggers/it’s their job. Bloggers get stories from Govt/it’s their job.
The sick thing is, Cindy, Joyce is absolutely right -- as far as he goes. And if you don't believe me, just find the proceedings of the Leveson Inquiry and try not to roll your eyes too hard as a string of political spin things and their masters lined up for days on end to artlessly claim they never "briefed against" their political enemies, within and without.
The question, as Danyl, put it is have taxpayers actually been paying for conduct that is, at the very best, unsavory if not downright illegal?

Whatevs, Balance. I'll happily own to my internal proof-reader frequently being lazy and downright incompetent (I still type "Daniel" for Danyl Maclauhlan and "Sasha" for Sacha with embarrassing regularity), and if you want to put some "conspiratorial" read on that I can't stop you.
Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar and a typo is just a typo.
