Access: Disability abuse: it’s not OK, in reply to
Yes, the suggestion of an all party accord to come up with decent plans to address domestic violence ( as was done for the elderly so that they at least have a reasonable minimum income now) is a sensible one. I'd like to see these accords across all the areas Kiwis hold dear- education, tertiary student costs, but also disability, refugees and beneficiaries. In Finland, the Government has long term plans which are followed regardless of party politics, so that they have actually made progress in areas like education, instead of tending to move back and forth as we do with each change of government. I hope something really positive will come from the Glenn inquiry, it's past time something effective was done.

thanks Hilary, a really broad overview with several links to valuable further information. What else needs to change? Off the top of my head - Attitudes-

Yes, a shocking documentary piece from Warwick, and things have certainly changed. However we (our society) does not get as upset about the untimely death or the abuse or neglect of very vulnerable people with disabilities as it does about similar events happening to able bodied people. Nathan

is the latest in a long line. The police decided not to lay any charges. There was no real consequence. What does this say about NZ attitudes? We have a long way to go. -
New topic please, anybody would think we have nothing to discuss!

If anyone knows of any research or particular policies they think I should highlight, please let me know.
It would be interesting to have data on the impact of Funded Family Care http://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/disability-services/disability-projects-and-programmes/funded-family-care-notice-and-operational-policy
on Christchurch people with disabilities, particularly as it excludes partners/spouses from payment which can mean extreme poverty or being forced to rely on outside support. -

and the "Enabling good lives" demonstration has been set up for Christchurch, and now the Waikato, but is not (yet) available to the rest of the country.

I've just read through the posts on this topic. The picture painted is of a dysfunctional society where a tiny proportion are causing enormous deprivation to the majority. It can't last. History shows what will happen unless change is made voluntarily.
And telling people that "12% of households pay 76% of net taxes" is so ridiculous in terms of the wealth distribution problems our society faces that it could be a line in a sick comedy routine. Who will have the last laugh? -

Handy linked list of Key's previous lies about GCSB. Such character.
Yes indeed, it's quite a list.
