(Sidebar: Is there some law I haven’t heard of that Benedict Cumberbatch has to be cast in everything? Either that boy never sleeps, or human cloning is a reality.)

    The cheekbones give him superpowers.

We arnt quite mature & secure in our own nationhood while these gaudies are around.

Is there any reason we can't have an honours system *and* a republic, should the republic bit come to pass?

Also, if the child prostitution line is the best that the Right can do on this one, it bodes superbly well.

Tau Henare has also been trying "but what possible reason could we have for wanting to stop people investing in property?" on Twitter.

You have Richard Hulse to thank for the quality and smartness of that service. Dude is a hero.

It's pretty legendary. I am still consistently amazed that I can be on the other side of the world and dial up NatRad in thirty seconds, live and crystal-clear. After the earthquakes, given the general non-accessibility of the TV news, it was a lifeline.

Just to note that a woman was killed as a result of Auckland's 2.9 quake.

The article seems to indicate there have been plenty of other slips in the area over the past months. It's a bit of a stretch to attribute the death directly to the quake.

  • Up Front: Life on Mars, in reply to Bart Janssen,

Excuse me - we have quite enough volcanoes at the moment thanks - you do know middle America is due a really big one soon (that is in the next 10000 yrs or so)

I am actually embarrassed by how many times I have watched that silly BBC docudrama on the subject, so, er. Yes.

And that's precisely the reason all this earthquake nonsense needs to stop - I've got to have somewhere to come back to when I flee the inevitable madness of supervolcanoes/federal bankruptcy/right-wing theocracy/Marxist fascism/mutant uprising/alien robots. You people need to take better care of the place while I'm gone, is all I'm saying.

You have to remember that that northern chick is a ticking time bomb and that one day she’ll give you a wolloping completely out of the blue that will make what you’re getting from Christchurch look like a neck massage – and don’t expect to get any help as quickly as you did with Christchurch either, there’s only two exits from her place and she’s set it up to trap you in there with her when she cut loose!

If something happens to Wellington while I'm overseas I may actually just lose it completely. That's your warning, Wairarapa faultline. You don't want me to lose it, right? (I mean, at least a nice new volcano in Auckland would give us some variety.)

So if you could all just get excited and not know why, that’d be great.

I am excited, but confused. About right?

  • Southerly: Tower Insurance Have Some Bad…, in reply to Bart Janssen,

This is NOT about the insurance companies using a loophole it is about the National government of New Zealand creating the loophole for them to exploit.

It's about both. The government's failure to stop this is unacceptable, and they deserve blame. But someone(s) at the insurance company also made the decision to take this interpretation of the law, and I don't feel inclined to let them off just because Corporations Are Amoral Monoliths, you know?
