There is intercept and photographic evidence linking some of the activist people with the camps and, in at least one one case, with Whiri Kemara's weapons purchases.
Goodness. One of the TV channels (I was flipping between them and can't remember which) pretty clearly identified who the person trying to buy a pistol and silencer was. The person is an activist and one of the pacifists whose supporters insisted 'would never have held a gun in their life'. How interesting.

I am prepared to bet that a large group of New Zealanders, maybe even a majority, think "Stormtrooper" refers to the white-armoured minions in Star Wars.
I've thrown the term around a bit recently and that's certainly how I meant it; I had in mind those geeks in the US who like to dress up as stormtroopers.
I still think the decision to raid Ruatoki was terribly ill-advised, but it seems a bit more reasonable in light of their evidence.

And just as another aside, I couldn't help wondering if a tiny bit of Clark's wrath towards the alleged terrorists came from them referring to John Key as 'the new Prime Minister'. They certainly didn't do themselves any favors there . . .

It seems to me the police could have got a lot of comments of a similar flavour for a lot less trouble in any one of a number of skinhead hangouts in Christchurch.
Yeah, lot's of people have regurgitated this sentiment but the logic of it still escapes me. Since when did 'they're no worse than the neo-nazi's' become the criteria for legitimacy in our society?
And if a gang of skinheads WERE chatting amiably about carrying out mass-murder AND stockpiling guns AND training up on how to build napalm bombs and ambush cars then I would freakin' well want the police to keep a very close eye on them and stop them from hurting or killing anyone.

And you'd then be on here demanding to know why, oh why did the police violate an innocent supermarket and terrorise the people of Ruatoki while shopping for their kai when they could have just carried out early morning raids?

I wandered down the hill to take a look at the hikoi during lunch time: the unintentional irony of ranks of people dressed up in combat fatigues with keffiyah masking their faces chanting 'we're not terrorists' was certainly worth a walk in the wind.

I don't really think gang members (or gun clubs) spend their down time daydreaming about blowing up petrol stations or murdering people to 'get used to killing'. But if they do then I'm happy for the police to keep an eye on them too.
My perception is that the police tried to have it both ways here - they were in the unhappy position of either safeguarding the public and conducting their raids before they had concrete evidence of a plot, or continuing to monitor their activities until they had enough proof to press charges under the TSA, leaving open the possibility that these idiots would go out and hurt someone. They've rather clumsily tried to do both and it hasn't worked out.
I'd argue that the police have done Lockett, Iti and the rest of these jackasses a favour - it was only a matter of time before they managed to blow themselves up, drench one another in napalm or accidentally shoot each other.

Hundreds of protesters are expected to descend on Parliament today to oppose new anti-terrorism laws just passed by Parliament. The hikoi that began last week in Ruatoki, Bay of Plenty, where police conducted their raids on "terror" suspects, is due to arrive in Wellington this morning.
