  • Hard News: People Take Drugs, in reply to Rex Widerstrom,

I feel one of the major obstacles to harm minimisation efforts as discussed here are the organisations who follow the "12 Step" method of recovery.

Any group who is dogmatic about treatment is going to do some harm. I can see why abstinence is a popular program, though. For starters, for some people it works. Also, it's the one treatment that will be approved of by all prohibitionists, who could easily say that other treatments are not treatments at all.

But P does seem to have a higher attrition rate than anything else I've seen.

I'd say it's more that it becomes extremely noticeable when someone is abusing it. Hard to ignore people having psychotic episodes.

Oh yes. I saw a few long-term junkies jump ship to P -- and then proceed to lose their previous ability to manage their lifestyles.

Yes, P is much more insidious, precisely because you can function well on it, and overdosing sounds almost impossible.

  • Hard News: Some Lines for Labour, in reply to Rich Lock,

Listening to National politicians being interviewed would probably get me angry enough to be worth an extra 10kg on the bench press.

Slowly and with control is better for weights...perhaps some "Goff of the late afternoon" for the weight session to give a nice angry base, and switch to "Bennett of the early evening" for the cardio workout on the punchbag.

Thanks for that Mr Lock. The futility of that policy is illustrated by the NZ experience: when you stop the flow of heroin something even uglier takes its place, ie.'P'.

Do they actually appeal to the same people? They have practically opposite effects. Mind you there's no law that says you can't mix uppers with downers. They just have to be coffee and booze, is all.

Given that the SAS are in their country shooting people, I think the cat might be out of the bag on that one.

I remember when the US started their assault in Afghanistan, and some Jihadist sympathizer was being interviewed by a NZ reporter, and was saying "anywhere that attacks us must remember the World Trade Centre, we will strike and kill your people". The reporter said "Even NZ, which is sending some troops?". The response: "When we find out where NZ is, yes".

That's the team-jersey view of alignment, very Gygaxian (derived from his religious upbringing).

Was he Lawful or Chaotic is the next question.

And I'm sure all the people using it have impeccable working-class cred themselves, you understand.

I'm often amazed by how much more actual manual labor I've done than many a person who has called me bourgeois. But that is evidence in itself of my middle-classness.

  • Up Front: First, Come to Your Conclusion, in reply to Tom Beard,

There's perhaps less of that sort of thing in mainstream porn now (ahem, not that I'd know), which is a pity since the titles were often hilarious.

Very hard to be sure, the industry is so enormous now, that there's probably more than there ever was. But is it less as a proportion? Probably...anyone can make porn now, you don't need equipment and distribution networks that evolved from non-porn film. I think the trend is more towards a reality TV style now, because it's so cheap to make.

More than a little creeped to find I still have a PayPal account with a bigger spending limit than my NZ credit card. Still prefer direct transfer tho. Done.
