Bad story-padding award of the week goes to whoever wrote (on Stuff) that Obama was seeking to become the first Democrat since Bill Clinton to be re-elected. Well, duh!

Hard News: The Advocate, in reply to
I suppose when the Titanic was sinking some might think good reportage was a technical analysis of the ship’s buoyancy, the number of water-tight doors.Personally I would be more interested in interviewing the people stranded onboard and asking about the lack of life-boats.
An Ian Wishart would have been questioning the owners about the identity of the ship. Multiple forms of reportage are necessary and welcome.

I found myself in the rare position of being near a TV on Monday morning and watched Breakfast's coverage of the school meals issue. Which left me wondering why Kidscan was seeking funding to deliver breakfasts to every needy school? Are they seeking a monopoly? Trying to drive out other providers, such as Red Cross? The fact that the reporting never mentioned the existence of other agencies in this area suggests that TVNZ journalists did no independent research and merely worked up a story brought to them by Kidscan.

I hope that if/when they send the information to Mr Hartvelt our BOT add a requirement that he adds a footnote that 15% of the school roll are ORRS students, some with a mental age as low as 3 months, whose scores have been aggregated.
I am Hartvelt of Borg. You will be aggregated. Resistance is futile.

and kids who don't fit the frame will be shunned.
That's happening already. The local Decile 10 school is known to refuse entry to kids whose records suggest they will be "difficult".

Geoff, I don't see the Theatre Royal in Raetihi on your site. It it's closed, it must only be a few years ago as they were still running a film festival in 2008.

The cinema in Papanui was the Barclay - it was also my childhood haunt. The building was pulled down close to 20 years ago (when they changed Papanui roundabout into traffic lights the road somehow took up more space) - and the site is now a small park.

Dear world media, this is CERN. We're terribly sorry but there was a mix-up in our communications department and we need to retract yesterday's press release. Unfortunately, dear old Mrs Spooner, the receptionist, is getting a little hard of hearing. The actual message she received from operations was that they had found a plumber to fix Dr Biggs' hose on.

I would love to post wintery pix but there was a pohutukawa starting to flower on the way in to New Plymouth this morning! It's not as though we've been short of wintry weather either.

Hard News: Moving from frustration to disgust, in reply to
...and in the first year or two of education the standards results reflect the pre-school environment not the quality of the school. Our son is reading at level 19 (two thirds of the way through the primary reading structure) eight weeks into Year 1. Yet some of his classmates cannot count to 5 nor tell you their family name. The school (Decile 1) is not responsible for either result. However, with skilled and dedicated staff they will often bring those children forward through 2-3 years of pre-school experience in the space of a year - only to be told they are failing under National Standards.
