  • Hard News: Food and drink,

You mean the one way entry thing? Can't see it doing any harm, but if it's a one way entry to a bar where the definition of 'intoxicated' is 'too pished to find you wallet', it's not going to do any good either.

Yeah that's what I meant. I don't really like the idea myself. But it might work in practice as a compromise in that it may avoid the problem mentioned here already: if you just close everything at a specific time everyone hits the streets at the same time. So maybe cut the bar-hopping earlier but let everyone wind up (or wind down) at their own pace otherwise.

You may know it as 'sparrow's fart'.

Was that the name of Simon's nightclub?

    Simon,

What do you think of the suggested policy whereby people can't go to a new bar after 2 am (or 3 as I believe they are trying in Chch) but the bar can remain open.

After the gym at 6 in the morning,

What is this "6 in the morning" thing? I have not heard of it.

It depends on the type of pulses that one uses. Even if does take as much as an hour, you can have that on while you do other things in the evening and have it ready for the next day.

Ah, this is what you meant by cooking it "from scratch" in ten minutes, then.

Taser is electrocuting.don't see that as between.

I don't think you know what "electrocuting" means.

still think we can do better.

Maybe, in general, but based on what we know at this point about this particular incident, the police seemed to have acted reasonably.

  • Island Life: The Guilt of Clayton Weatherston,

From the article Sophie linked to: "Neighbours said police tried to reason with him as he waved the meat cleaver around. A towel covered what he had in his other hand."

There's no suggestion (so far) that the police were trigger happy here.

Well it just seems violence is every bloody where and cops wanna electrocute or shoot and there isn't any between.

Well, the argument is that the taser is between doing nothing/waiting till someone is harmed/risking their own lives even more on the one hand, and shooting. Not that I've made my mind up on the taser issue, but it does seem like a "no win" situation for the cops here. What did you want the police to do, get into a knife fight?

...how many hands did the guy have?

Was the meat cleaver plus multiple knives thing something the police specifically said, or the media? Either way, I don't see the relevance to what Matthew was commenting on.

And, if said ordinary person shot the person.....?

Silly police. Why didn't they set their Glocks' to stun??
