  • Hard News: Privacy and the Public Interest, in reply to BenWilson,

a strongly coherent and credible plan to bring about a universal basic income.

With you on this. It's a way forward, when we keep looking backwards.
But when I were a lad, being on the dole was far less punitive than it is now. Unemployment was over 10% in the early 80s. Most of the jobs I first had were 'make-work' schemes; student job schemes, and 'PEP' schemes. The jobs paid relatively well, and the dole wasn't as financially tough, nor as filled with nastiness and petty obligations, as it is today.
We largely have Ruth Richardson and Jim Bolger to thank for that, with Roger Douglas and co paving the way. There was a concious and calculated decision to make not working more horrible in NZ. And no major party, to all their shame, has moved to significantly reject that.
So we have a long way to go, to even get back to where we were on the 'moral obligation to work'. Even when there is no meaningful work and the pay rates don't support a decent life.

  • Hard News: Privacy and the Public Interest,

    No question last year.

Ede was a senior adviser in the National leader's office. He provided communication advice and support to the prime minister and to National Party MPs, including in the area of social media and other media.

    stuff Dec 13.

  • Hard News: Privacy and the Public Interest, in reply to Trevor Nicholls,

Does anyone know if Jason Ede still has a job?

For life, one is inclined to think. Or until he opens his mouth.

  • Hard News: Privacy and the Public Interest, in reply to Luke Williamson,

    CJM – truly eloquent. Rage/sadness/despair/rage.

I refuse to give up until Sunday 21 at the earliest.

And beyond, eh? Because if this all just slides under the table, we’re living in another country. And it’s a horribly f*cked up place.

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics,

Nothing new, but a little mash-up around the one moment JK talked openly – if a little shame-faced looking- of his association with Slater.

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics,

Ede is the 'missing link' between Key and Slater. It's not a coincidence he's vanished. Was he at work the day "dirty politics" came out and gone the next morning?
Has he agreed to appear at the 'inquiry'? Will it be under oath?

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics, in reply to Keir Leslie,

I think the Paganis may be regular hunting partners of the Lusk/Williams nexus

    Explains a lot :(
Also gives a sinister/pathetic note when they are wheeled out to give 'balance' as 'commentators from the left'.
Did they get a big thumbs up from the 'govt media team'?

  • Capture: By Night,

Gorgeous. When there's so little of it, you really become conscious photography is all about the quality of the light.

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics,

(I cast no party vote in 1996, and you should have no problem guessing why if I say I was living in Wellington Central at the time.)

And on cue, Campaign pops up at NZ on Screen. Wish I had time to watch it.
ETA: Threw that in before catching up. Whew.
Crucially, so far whatever contact JK had with Whale, he was smart/lucky enough to a/ use a proxy, Ede or b/ talk, rather than email or text. Just the harmless old metadata on Slater's phone would be interesting.
