And dare I say it. most of them go their entire careers without being persons of interest to a commission of inquiry into corruption.

Yes, it's worth remembering that it's a much bigger country, so there's a lot more cops which means more crooked ones, who we tend to hear about.

But I have to say in Melbourne that I saw a lot of police eating in restaurants, and never once saw one pay. One guy helped himself to the till before leaving, though, while the owner looked on in impotent despair. And I left a jacket at Burger King, which was handed in to the police, and my camera, which was noted on the police report as being in the pocket when they got it, was gone, and never recovered. So on a purely subjective impression, it seems that casual corruption is more widespread there.

Can that really be the first time that joke has been made?

Hell no, I think it's a Facebook page, even.

"patty of ground beef in a bun with lettuce, tomato sauce and sliced gherkin" when you go to McDonald's.

They put lettuce in them now? The innovation!

    What a silly little fella.

Yup. The whole thing seemed to cut him to the quick. So he's following his own metaphor, that blogs should be like ruffneck bars, and is lurching like a drunk from one to the other, hoping to ingratiate himself with the publicans by slagging off the competitors, which works right up until they realize he's a customer they don't really want either.

  • Hard News: About Arie,

I hate to think what they'd make of armed Aussie cops on NZ streets.

Particularly when I remember one incident from when I lived in Melbourne of a guy who was shot by a policeman for allegedly coming at the cop with a screwdriver. In the post-mortem he was found to have 11 separate bullet holes in him. Since the police carried six-shot Magnums, the copper in question must have unloaded all of his bullets into the victim, then reloaded, and fired a further 5 shots. There was no investigation.

i think you mean unlikely to violent crimes. other crimes are still committed, because the punishment for them tends to be in soft prisons or home detention.

Yes, I don't think the fear of violence is meant to be built into our way of dealing with extremely minor robbery.

it definitely describes our current economic situation more accurately than "depression"

I don't think so. Depression itself is not well defined. Stagflation is a much more specific term, and could be experienced at the same time as a depression. It doesn't describe everything that's happening, just a couple of indicators.

Essentially a depression is a sustained downturn. We're having that, even though the ways of measuring it are not identical to the Great Depression.

I don't think "panic inducing" is fair. If we're in a depression, we can't just hide our heads in the sand to avoid doing something about it. Quite the opposite, it's best if we front up to it, and work out what to do. It was one of the most grueling things about the Great Depression that people wouldn't even acknowledge it was happening until well into it, there was always the "let's ride it out, things will improve" which kept people hanging on and hoping, rather than getting wildly upset and actually forcing required change.
