  • The New World Order: A Visual Guide,

American politics breeds disgruntled voters who are a significant set of issue voters. They have unreasonable demands that are unlikely to ever be met, but a good slice of getting elected is the opposition putting in face time with the disgruntled in the hope that the disgruntled will get riled enough to vote against the incumbant.

Oppostion activists rile the disgruntled by calling the incumbant an evil, machiavellian, mad, genius, moron who can't tie his own shoelaces and is conniving with (insert large monolithic ill defined entity here) to sell out America. Over the last two terms the then empowered party was accused of a raft of evil machinations like illegal wiretapping, running a blackhole prison that disallows habeas corpus, being entirely too partisan, making war of no reason and hideously unbalanced budgets. The opposition tapped this groundswell during the campaign by hinting these things might be changed by electing the opposition candidate for President. Their candidate was elected and now the disgruntled voting block is being courted by the new opposition.

I'm not suggesting we be quite as blatant as that, but I do wonder why we haven't produced wickets with a bit more seam movement.

Because Ishant Sharma and Zaheer Khan are decent seam bowlers. And because on pitches that do-a-bit our batting line up generally doesn't.

Oh, and I enjoyed this from one of Farrar's darlings:

    Heh.

I was more shocked by who wrote that.

That or the Antichrist. It's kind of interesting how there was no middle ground.

    Middle ground.

I like the restraint Obama's shown in not invading some third world country for no good reason. I dislike his willfully giving trillions of dollars to extremely rich people who are proven incompetents with money.

  • Hard News: Problems,

Australian economist John Quiggin's been running a series called refuted economic doctrines over at Crooked Timber.

That is going to be a long series.

A series on irrefutable economic theories would prove infinitely shorter.

Karl Marx had views - community does not exist within capitalist society, but popular sport engenders community spirit within capitalist society.

Karl Marx is a 100 years dead and his ideas have been thoroughly discredited by events, but there are still be a few people who follow his school of thought.
